Day18 2010年8月11日

McBride to Golden
11,138km to 11,661km = 523km

朝6時に起きて出発の準備。朝は流石に寒いです。 曇っているので雨が降らなければいいなと願いつつ準備を進めます。Brianも起きて準備し始めました。8時前には出発。

先ずはJasperを目指します。 Jasperに入るて前にMt Robsonが現れます。いい山容をした山です。 何故かMcBrideからJasperまで燃費が悪いです。普段リッターあたり20キロは行くのに18.5キロです。特に高度があったわけでもなく普通に走ってたんですけどね。Brianも燃費が悪くなってました。

Jasperで給油してLake Louiseに向かいます。国立公園なのでで10ドル検問所で払います。そしたら隣の検問所にWhitehorseで出会ったNeilがいるじゃないですか！こりゃ奇遇ですな。 それにしても絶景ですな。本当に絵葉書の様な風景が広がります。Athabasca Gracierまで何回か写真休憩をしました。

Athabasca Gracierは本線からすぐそこにあり実際に氷河の上を歩けます。氷河までの歩道に所々1982とか1992とか年号があります。それは氷河がそこまであったという印です。今ではかなり後退してます氷河。説明書きでは1885年以来60%も小さくなったそうです。改めて、こりゃあ大変だァ、て思いましたね。Brianとも歩いていだ環境問題の話しをしてました。 実際に氷河を歩いて、チョット感動。表面はシャリシャリですね。







Lake Louiseまで1時間ほど走り湖畔で休憩。いい眺めですなァ。それから1号線をGoldenという街まで。


キャンプ場でもよかったのですかお金をセーブする為さらに50キロくらい走りレストエリアでキャンプ。キャンプ駄目とサインが有るんですけど、まぁいいか。でも蚊が多いのには閉口です。余りに蚊に刺されるからテントに避難。まだ8時過ぎなんですけど眠くてそのまま就寝。 明日はNakuspです。さてどんな出会いがあるでしょう⁉


Day18 11Aug2010

McBride to Golden

I got up at 6:00am and started to pack up. It was clouded in the morning. Brian and I was ready by 8:00am and headed to Jasper.

Just before the border of Alberta, Mt Robson was showing it's mighty appearance. I took a couple of photos. Not sure why we got bad fuel consumption to Jasper. We didn't go hard and it wasn't really high in altitude. It got better after Jasper, so it is a mystery.

Fueled up on Jasper and heading to Lake Louise. At the park toll, I saw Neil, the Goldwing rider met in Whitehorse, at another lane. What a coincident! Along the way, we saw all great scenery. Just like post cards. No wonder lots of tourist come here. We stopped for photos a few times.

At Athabasca Gracier, we can walk on the actual glacier! There are signs saying the glacier was here in 1982 or 2000 along the footpath to the glacier. It is said since 1885, the glacier has lost 60% of its volume! Global warming is really affecting our planet. Brian and I was talking about environmental issues along the way. It was fun to step on the glacier.

We stopped at Lake Louise and had a rest on lake side. The view is great here too. Then we took route 1 to Golden. We could've stayed in a campground but decided to stay at a rest area to save money. We are at the rest area around 50km east of Golden.

Tomorrow we will get to Nakusp. Hope we'll meet lots of nice people there.

Day17: 2010年8月10日

Smithers to McBride

今日はついにMurrayさんとSmithersの街にお別れをする日です。
朝7時半に起きて出発の準備です。一回パニアから荷物を全部出したのでなかなか物がパニアに収まってくれません。結構使わないものとか着ないものもあるからどっかで日本に送り返さないとな。

一段落してMurrayさんとコーヒーを飲んでしばし歓談。
Murrayさんは9時半に出かけるので、逆にワシが見送ることに。
別れ際涙がこぼれそうになりました。きっと再開出来ると信じてます。まだ日本に来たことがないそうなので、是非お招きしたいですね。本当にありがとうございました！

10時きっかりに準備ができたので出発。まずは65キロはなれた街Houstonまで走って給油。破損したパニアも問題なさそうです。

Price Georgeからどっちのルートをとるか悩んでたんですが、Tim Hortonsで昼飯を食べながら16号線をそのままJasperまで抜けることに決定。Jasperの途中に世界一周中のシゲさんが絶賛しているMt. Robsonもありますしね。JasperからLake Louiseへ抜けてHorizon Unlimitedの会合があるNakuspへ行くルートを取ります。

Prince Georgeには3時過ぎに着きました。MacBrideあたりまで何箇所かレストエリアがあるので出来ればタダでキャンプしようともくろんだのですが、なんかあまりいい感じがしなかったので結局Beaver View Campgroundというキャンプ場に21.50ドルでキャンプとなりました。ちょっと高いですがいいところですよ。

しかも隣のテントサイトにはBMW F800GSがあるじゃないですか！彼はイギリス人のBrian。
これからアラスカのPrudhoe Bayを目指すそうです。Horizon Unlimitedの会合の話をしたら、彼も参加することになりました。道連れができてまた楽しい旅になりそうです！。明日は彼とLake Louiseを目指します。


Day17: 10Aug2010

Smithers to McBride

Today I have to say Good-bye to Murray and town of Simthers.

It is so sad to leave, but the trip goes on.
I got up around 7:30am and put all gears into the panniers.
It's hard to put everything back into the boxes. I need to send back few things to Japan soon.

Murray and I had a cuppa and chat for a while.
As he had to go out at 9:30am, I saw him off instead!
When saying Good-bye, I was nearly crying. I hope we can see again. He hasn't come to Japan, so once I get back there, i should invite him over.

I left Smithers at 10:00am.
The first stop was in  Houston, 65km from Smithers. Fueled up my bike and kept goijng on Route 16 to Prince George.

I wasn't sure which route I should take to Nakusp. I decided to go Jasper and Lake Louise and then go to Nakusp while having lunch at Tim Hortons.

I thought I can have a free camp at a rest area between Price George and McBride. There was a nice rest area (with toilets) on a river side. I was thinking to camp there, but something telling me don't, so I kept going till McBride.

Now I'm camping at Beaver View Campgroud at McBride. It costs CAD21.50 but it's a pretty nice campground. Next to my tent site is Brian, a BMW F800GS rider. He is from UK and headinjg to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.
I thold him about Horizon Unlimited gathering in Nakusp, and he decided to go with me!
Now I have another company to ride! It's gonna be fun. Tomorrow we are heading to Lake Louise, or near there.

Day16: 2010年8月9日

Smithers
10,536km to 10,556km = 20km

今日はゆっくりとした朝を迎えました。
Murrayさんは友達のDaveを車修理工に連れて行くとのことで出かけました。
10時から例のカフェで集まるとのことなのでそれまでネットで調べごと。

バイクで街まで出てカフェへ。今日の午後からゴルフをすることになりました。
ワシはゴルフコースに出たことないので（打ちっぱなしに2回ほどいきましたが、へタッピすぎてお話になりませんでした）足手まといにならないか心配です。

昼飯をMurrayさん家で食べた後ゴルフ場へ。

Murrayさんの友達のFred, Lauren, Ellen, Murrayさん、そしてワシの5人でプレー開始！
FredとLawrenがいろいろアドバイスをくれるので思ったよりもうまく打てます。
よくボールを見て力まずに打つ、がポイントですね。
若いころよりも力まないのがいいのかもしれませんね。

1時から始めて3時半くらいまでゴルフを堪能しました。以外に面白いですね、ゴルフ。
オーストラリアでやっておけばよかった。
ゴルフの後はクラブのパブで一杯二杯飲んで休憩。

EllenがCanadian Tireで大きなクロゼットを買ったので、それをMurrayさんとDaveとワシで車に乗せてEllen家まで運びました。それからEllenの家でディナーをご馳走になりました。
Ellenの息子のGavinと彼女のKathleenを交えての夕食。豚肉とサーモンのグリルおいしかったなぁ。
愛犬Dextorも本当に人なつっこくてSmithersから離れるのが寂しくなっちゃいます。

明日はいよいよ出発です。天気予報は晴れ。いい日になりそうです。

Day16: 09Aug2010

Smithers, BC

I had slow morning today. Surfed on Internet before 10:00am and went for a cuppa in town. Murray and his friends were going for golfing this afternoon, so I joined them.

Fred, Lauren, Ellen, Murray and I, 5 of us played together. 
It was the first time playing golf on a cource. I have tried driving range a couple of times but I never got right hitting balls. I wonder if I would slow them down.

Fred and Lauren gave me good advice, so I guess I wasn't that bad after all.
I didn't know golfing is such fun. I should have played golf in Australia when I had so many chances.

Ellen invited me for dinner at her place. With Murray, Elllen and her son Gavin and his girl friend Kathleen, and Dextor, I had great time there.

Now it is hard for me to leave Smithers. Such wonderful people and wonderful town.
But I have to keep going. It will be fine day tomorrow according to weather forcast.
It will be a good day for restarting my trip.

Day15: 2010年8月8日

Smithers, BC

今日は朝ご飯をいただいた後（自家製ストロベリージャムのトースト！）バイクを洗いました。
虫の死骸やホコリを綺麗に洗い流します。
Teslinでこけたせいでウインドスクリーンとエンジンバー、それにウインカーに多少傷がついてしまいました。
まぁこれからどんどん傷ついていくのでしょうけど、ちょっとショックですよね。

それからMurrayさんのバイク仲間のJohnに会いに3人で街中にコーヒーを飲みに行きました。
去年MurrayさんとJohn、そしてもう一人のJohn（JJ)の3人でカナダからアルゼンチンの最南端ウシュアイアまでバイクで旅をしたのです。JohnもBMW R1200GSに乗っています。いろいろ話を聞いてとても参考になりました。
今夜6時からニュージーランド人のライダーRodgerとRuthを招いてJohnの家で夕飯を食べるのでワシもお招きをいただきました。やったね。

Canadian Tireに連れて行ってもらい、ボンドとタイダウンベルトを買ってパニアの修理をしました。
完璧には程遠いですが、まず安心して物を入れられる状態にできました。

ランチは寿司にしよう、ということになり街に繰り出したのですが、日曜日なのでレストランは閉まってます。
パブは開いていたのでパブメシということに。でもおいしかったです。ここでもMurrayさんにご馳走になってしまいました。

午後はオーストラリアの確定申告をオンラインで済ませようと悪戦苦闘。いろいろな情報を打ち込まなければならないのですが、何件かの情報が手元に無いので日本の両親にEメールで情報を送ってもらてなんとか無事終了。

気づいたらもう5時半過ぎなのでJohnの家にMurrayさん、Ellenとワシの3人でお邪魔しました。
Johnの家の敷地は半端なく広いです。最近温室を建てたそうなんですけど、温室だけでもワシの実家より広いです。さすがはカナダ。
Murrayさん、John、Rodgerそしてワシの男性陣バイクの話で、Ellen、Johnの奥さんJennifer、Rodgerの奥さんRuthの女性陣は他の話題で盛り上がっていました。

Rodgerもこれから南米を目指すのでJohnから色々な情報をもらいました。

何から何までお世話になって、本当にありがたいです。Smithers、いいところです。小さな町ですけれど、氷河がある山がすぐそばにあり、釣りやハイキング、スキーなどなどいろんな遊びが楽しめます。
日本人が思い描くカナダ人の暮らしを見ることが出来る、そんな素敵な街です。
明日は雨らしいので、もう一泊させてもらって出発は火曜日にしました。


Day15: 08Aug2010

Smithers, BC

This morning I washed my bike. There were lots of dead bugs and dust on the windscreen, head light and oil cooler grill, I washed them all.
Because of the drop in Teslin, there are some scratch on the windscreen, the engine bar and a blinker.
I know the bike will get lots of scrathes, but I was sad to see those on my bike...

After that, we went to a cafee shop in town to see Murray's mate John.  
Murray John and another John (JJ) went all the way down to Ushuaia, Argentina by motorbikes (Kawasaki KLR650) last year.
He is gonna invite Rodger and Ruth, New Zealanders riding Suzuki V-Strom 1000 all the way down to South America, for dinner tonight, so Muuray, Ellen and I were also invited. It is gonna be fun.

After the coffee, Murray took me to Canadian Tire to get some glue and tie down belt to fix my pannier.
There is no way I can fix the pannier perfectly, but I could put it back into better shape.

We thought having Sushi for lunch would be a good idea but Japanese restaurants in town were closed as it is Sunday!
There was no restaurant open, so we had lunch in a pub instead but it was a really nice meal.

In the afternoon, I was doing tax return for the last financial year. I thought I have all documentations with me but few of them were missing. I e-mailed my parents and they e-mailed me back with all necessary info, so I could lodge the tax return.

We went to John' place at 6:00pm. He just built a green house. It looks really nice and it is bigger than my parents place in Tokyo.
His wife Jennifer cooked us really nice meal and we all talked about motorbike. As Rodger and Ruth, and I am heading down to South America from now, John and Murray gave us lots of usuful information.

How I can thank Murray, Ellen, John and Jennifer? They have been so nice to me and I have really great time here in Smithers.
Smithers is a little town around 400km north of Vancouver. I like here. The real Canadian life is here.

Weather forcast for tomorrow isn't that good, so I decided to stay here one more night and leave on Tuesday.

Day14: 2010年8月7日
9850km to 10,520km = 670km
Dease River to Smithers

朝起きたら幸い雨はあがってます。
それにしても屋根付の宿はいいですねぇ。暖かいし朝テントをたたむことを考えずにすみますしね。

9時ごろに出発。地図ではダートがあるってありますが大したことないです。
雨は降ったり止んだりでしたが、大した降りにならなかったので問題ありませんでした。

Bell2で給油と昼飯。 なんでBell“2”なんだろうと思ったら、MurrayさんがBellの渡し1と2があるのだそうです。
ガソリンスタンドとレストランがあるのがBellの渡し“2”ということなんですね。

37号線の景色はいいですね！山に湖に川に97号線よりもぜんぜんいいです。しかも山には氷河が！
生まれて初めて氷河を目撃しました。いいものですね。

今日一日だけで都合6頭の黒熊を見ました。エルク、ムースやカリブーには出会いませんでしたが…。

6時前にMurrayさんの家があるSmithersという街に到着。街に入る直前の山と氷河がとても綺麗でした。

Murrayさんの彼女のEllenも丁度バンクーバーから帰って来たところなので3人でMurrayさん家でステーキの夕飯をいただきました。久しぶりのご馳走です！やっぱ肉はうまいですね。
彼女の愛犬Dextorはやんちゃ盛りでかわいいです。

Murrayさん家にはもう一泊させてもらう予定です。明日はMurrayさんたちが近場の見所に連れて行ってくれたり、パニアの修理などする予定です。


Day14: 07Aug2010

Luckily the rain stopped in the morning.
The hut was really cossy. Sleeping under the roof is good as I don't  need to think about folding the tent in the morning.

We left there at 9:00am. According to the map I have, there are some unpaved section on route 37, but they weren't that bad.

The rain came and went through out the day but it wasn't really heavy so we could stay dry.

We stopped at Bell2 for gas and lunch. I wondered why the place called bell "2". Murray answered me that there is Bell 1 crossing and Bell 2 crossing. That's why the place is called Bell "2".

The scenary of route 37 is so much nicer than that of route 97. The mountains have graciers! It was the first time to see graciers in my life. I was really amazed by them. The gracier just before Smithers looks so amazing.

We saw 6 black bears today alone. Route 37 is famous for encoutering wild lives. Unfortunately I haven't seen any Elk, Moose and Caribou yet though.

We arrived at Smiters just before 6:00pm.　Murray's girl friend Ellen also came back from Vancouver today. Ellen cooked nice beef stakes and salad! It was my first decent dinner in Canada.

I will stay at Murray's place for another night and am planing to go Nakusp for Horizon Unlimited gathering. Murray and Ellen might go there too.

Tomorrow they are gonna show me around here and I have to fix my pannier any how.
