Caen to Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue (Camping la Gallouette)
71,310km to 71,555km = 245km

I will update English version later. As I am constantly on the move now and I cannot find enough time to write diaries in 2 languages...

今日も朝から雨。降ったり止んだりなので、止んだときを見計らってテントを撤収。結局10時過ぎに出発です。

It was raining a bit and sunny a bit from the morning. I put away the tent while it stopped rainng. I could leave the site after 10am. I was hoping I could start the day ealier...

先ずはサイト・ヒルマン(Site Hillman)へ。ここはイギリス軍が受け持った上陸地点で、待ち受けるドイツ軍との激戦の末砲台を占拠しました。イギリス国旗が誇らしく舞っています。

I visited "Site Hillman". Here were a German bunkers and trenches against Allies. This part of Normandy was appointed British to attack. After bloody battles, British secured the place. Union Jack was flying proudly.


















田舎のいい風景の中に、コンクリート造りの掩体壕や塹壕などが散在してます。

At a glance, it just looked like a nice country side. But there were concrete bunkers and trenches everywhere.

















塹壕の中は暗く、狭いですね。

In the trench, it was dark and confined.

















約70年前、ここで激戦があり、多くの若者たちが命を失ったとはとても思えないほど、静かで閑散としています。(塹壕から外を見た風景です）

In such a tranquility, it was hard to believe that there was a bloody battle 70 years ago and so many young lives were lost here. (The photo shown below is the view of the field from a trench).


















次はメルヴィル砲台（Batterie de Marville)へ。途中であの有名な「ペガサス橋(Pegasus Bridge)」を通りました。この橋を連合軍が獲得することにより、ドイツ軍の補給や増援を阻止できたのです。

I visited Battery of Marville. On the way there, I passed famous "Pegasus Bridge" where Allies tried to capture to block German supplies and reinforcement to the coast.

メルヴィル砲台は博物館(Musee)となっているので有料です。そのかわりしっかりと保存しています。

The site of Battery of Marville is now a museum and I had to pay 6 Euros to enter, so it was well maintained.

















先ずはダグラスC47がお出迎え。これと同じ型の飛行機が上パラシュート部隊を運んだんです。上陸部隊より一足先に敵地に散開し、後方支援するという作戦。

Douglas C47 greeted me at the entrance. Those C47 transported those paratroopers from Britain to Normandy just before the landing. The paratroopers were dropped of the planes at the dawn of D Da. They supported those landing tropps from behind the enemy lines.

















ここまで書いて電源が無くなりそうです。続きはまた後ほど。(今身を越えてイギリスに渡りマックで日記の続きを書いてます）。

M laptop battery was going to be flat soon, so I would write the rest later (now I am writing the rest at a MacDonald's).

ドイツ軍が作った塹壕のコンクリートの厚さには驚かされます。

I was amazed with the thickness of the concrete walls of the bunkers built by Germans.


















ここの圧巻はノルマンディー上陸作戦の当日の日の出前に連合軍パラシュート部隊の襲撃を20分ごとに再現してくれることです。塹壕の中に入るとサイレンが鳴り、始まります。大砲の轟音、小銃の音、爆音などなど、戦場の緊張感が伝わってきます。ここでは700人のパラシュート部隊のうち生還できたのは150人足らずとか・・・。

The main attaraction of this museum would be the replay of the dawn of D Day at this battery. Every 20 mins, they do the replay at a bunker. Once the time came, i the bunker, the siren went off, and German soldiers started to yell and fire guns. The sounds of gun fire, explosions, mashine guns etc, it made me feel likeI was in there on D Day. Very realistic indeed. Here only less than 150 paratroopers out 700 made the day through...

















今では平和になり、かつての敵も味方の旗も一緒にはためいてます。

Now we are living in peace. Those flags of Allies and the Axis are flying together.

















さて、今度は西へ向かいます。途中で雨に降られたりしながら、そして晴れ間が広がったり。ノルマンディーの天気はころころ変わります。海がキレイでした。

I headed to the west. It rained hard on the way and it got sunny again. The weather of Normandy was changing every minute. The beach was very beautiful.

















ガソリンが少なくなってきたのとお腹が空いたので、ガソリンスタンドに、と思いましたが今日は日曜日!!　スーパーは何処も閉まってますし、ガソリンスタンドもクレジットカード払いしか出来ないとばかり。何故だかワシのクレジットカードは使えないんですよ。「このままだとガス欠になってしまう!」ということで、大都市カンまで20キロ以上走り戻り、ようやく現金が使えるガソリンスタンドで給油。途中で雨に降られたりと、散々でした。これで2時間近く無駄に・・・。

The fuel was low, so I started to look for a petrol station. But it was sunday. There were plenty of petrolstatons around, but they were all automated pump, only accepting credit card payment. Somehow mycredit cards did not work, so I needed to find one where I could pay in cash. But I could not find around there. So I went back to Caen and finally I found one! I wasted 2 hours like that. Also all supermarkets were closed and I could not buy any food cheaply. I ended up having lunch at a burger shop "Quick".

そして一路ロンゲ・スール・メール砲台(Batterie de Longues Sur Mer)へ。ここはドイツ軍が使用した大砲がそのまま残っているんです。凄いですね。

After refueling and lunch, I rode straight to Batery of Longues Sur Mer. There were those cannons used by Germans.They were really massive cannons.

















掩体壕から見た風景。ここで敵の位置を確認して、大砲部隊に連絡し標準をあわせて攻撃したのでしょうね。

そしてコレヴィル・スール・メール（Colleville Sur Mer)にあるアメリカ軍墓地を訪れました。アメリカ軍が受け持った上陸地点「オマハ・ビーチ（Omaha Beach）」が見渡せます。映画「Saving Private Ryan」の最初20分のシーンでの先頭シーンが圧巻ですが、ここが兵士の血で真っ赤に染まった、なんてとても思えません。

Then I visited Aerican cemetary at Colleville Sur Mer. It's the heart of "Omaha Beach" where American troops landed. The famous first 20mins battle scean from "Saving Private Ryan" took place here. It was hard to believe that the beach and the sea turned into red with soldiers blood.

















兵士たちの墓標の数を見て、思わず涙がこぼれてきました。

When I saw so many tombs of soldiers, tears came out frommy eyes.


















こんなに沢山の若い命が失われたのですね。ヒツジと一緒に一分間黙祷をささげます。

So many of youg lives were lost in the battles. With Mr. Sheep, I had a minute of silence there.

















オマハ・ビーチに下りてみました。今ではキレイなビーチですが、1944年6月6日はここは修羅場だったんです。

I went down t Ohama Beach. Now it is a beautiful beach, but on 6th of June, 1944, it was bloody and deadly place.



















もう6時過ぎ。ポンテ・ドゥ・ホック（Ponte Du Hoc）を見学します。ここは米軍レンジャー部隊が崖を縄梯子でよじ登り、ドイツ軍要塞を奪取したんです。

It was after 6pm alrady. I visited Ponte Du Hoc. Here the German Battery was built on the top of a teep cliff. The US rangers climbed up the cliff with their ratlines. So many of the rangers lost their lves, but in the end they could secure the battery succcessfully, which saved lots of lives of the landing troops.

ノルマンディー、天気は悪かったのですが素晴らしいところです。「ノルマンディー上陸作戦」を抜きにしても風景は素晴らしいですし、街々もいい雰囲気です。

The eather was not really god in Normandy but I really had great time there. Besides "D Day", Normandy has got wonderul landscapes, nice towns and nice atmosphere.

本当はグランドキャンプ・マイシー（Grandcamp Maisy)の砲台を訪れたかったのですが、既に7時過ぎで閉場しているのでフェリー港に近いサン・ヴァースト・ラ・ホウゲ(Saint Vaast La Hougue)のキャンプ場へ。

I wanted to visit "Grandcamp Maisy", but it was already after 7pm and the site was closed. I went to a campground close to the ferry terminal.

明日は11時半のフェリーでイギリスに渡ります。久しぶりの左側通行ですね。気をつけないと。

Tomorrow I will cross English Channel to Great Britain! I have to be careful as I will ride on the left hand side!
