Day 666: 2012年5月24日

Thalwil (Das Haus von Laura & Uwe)
63,290km to 63,416km = 126km

I made a research on campsites and hostels in Italy. Then I left the house around 10:30am to Zurich to see Franco.

It's been nearly 4 months(!) since I saw him last in Buenos Aires. We rode together to the centre of Zurich.
We parked our bikes at the bike parking spots behind Zurich central station (Hauptbahnhof). We walked down Bahnhof Strasse- the main street of Zurich. It became a fine day and it even became hot.
DSCF3152.jpg

Zurich is a big modern city. I wondered where the world of Heidi gone?? As 70-80% of Switzerland is inhabitable or unsuitable for permanent setlement (due to high altitude), all population gathers in basins or flat lands.
Switzerland has 8 million population.

In the old town, we walked on stone paved streets. There were lots of tourists (including myself!).
DSCF3154.jpg

Cathedral of Zurich - Grossmunter. Long time ago, breads were given to poors from the tower. So once a year, the church helds a celemony to throw breads from the tower.
DSCF3157.jpg

We had lunch at a Chinese restaurant. It was Franco's treat. The last time I had Chinese wasin La Paz, Bolivia!! I had pork in Suchuan style and Franco had Thai Green Curry.
Both of them were very good! But they were very expensive... More than SFr. 25 each...
DSCF3159.jpg

River Limmat flows through Zurich from Lake Zurich. Water was very clear unlike other rivers flowing through big cities. The clock of the tower of St Peterskirch (can be seen in the photo) is the largest clock in Europe.
DSCF3161.jpg

After seeing the major part of Zurich, we went for a ride to the country side. We rode along side of Lake Zurich and then went south. We rode through cattle farms.

After riding 2 hours or so, we made a stop for drinks. We went into a pub(?) but as soon as we opened the door, we saw something strange. There were many girls in sexy outfits in the pub. Well, we entered to the wrong place... Franco had never been in this pub, so he did not know either. But there was no other shop around, so we ordered a drink each and had chat on the terrace.
DSCF3165.jpgDSCF3166.jpg

We could see the backyard from the terrace, and there were a few caravans. We guessed that extra service could be performed there... It looked like thse girls were from Estern Europe.
DSCF3163.jpg

It was 6:30pm already, so we rode back home. We made a stop on the way and I said good-bye to Franco. I would come back around this region in Autumn, so hopefully we could catch up again.
DSCF3167.jpg

Tomorrow I will ride to Italy. Pastas, pizzas, gelatos etc, I am looking forward having them!!

Day 665: 2012年5月23日

Thalwil (Das Haus von Laura & Uwe)
63,290km

It was raining from the morning as forcasted. So we gave up riding the motorcycle to Schaffhausen.

I made a little research about Mauritania. The most interesting tradition I found was "Gavarju" fattening up young girls. In Mauritania, obeased women are considered more beautiful. And also to foster obeased daughters and to have obeased wife(s) is the status of men.

Young girls are forced to eat a lot: 8-10 litres of Camel milk with lots of sugar a day, 2kgs of CousCous mixed with lots of sugar each meal!! If they do not eat a lot, they would be pinched their toes (often crushed). In our society, losing weights is the fad but in Mauritania, it is totally opposite.

Uwe drove me to Schaffhausen, the town near the border to germany, on the motorway. There were many tunnels we drove through. I thought Schaffhausen would be a small country town, but it was quite developed.
DSCF3138.jpg

There was a statue of William Tell, the hero of Siwss Independence.
DSCF3139.jpg

The main street was a promenado. It became sunny, good.
DSCF3140.jpg

Why we came to Schaffhausen? Because I wanted to visit "IWC". It's not "IWC" of International Whaling Commission, but it's International Watch Co. Yes, Switzerland is famous for watchmaking.
Actually watchmaking industry is more concentrated in French side of Swiss such as Geneve, but "IWC" of Schaffhausen is a famous brand for all watch collectors. Especially it is famous for its pilot watches.
DSCF3142.jpg

There was a small museum at the main building of IWC. It cost SFr. 6 to go in. Unfortunately photograph was prohibited. They had ranges of watches from the past to present, including my favorite Mark XI pilot watch.

Then  we went to see "Rheinfall" nearby. River Rhein flows from Switzerland, through Germany and Netherlands to North Sea.
DSCF3149.jpg

Comparing to Las Cascadas de Iguazu, it was smaller (of course), but with melting water from Alps, there was enough water and it was spectecuar.
DSCF3150.jpg

Back home, when I checked mails, my friend Tatsuya sent me information on obtaining visas for those middle eastern and central Asian countries. Thanks Tatsuya!

Uwe and Laura cooked "Pizzoccheri di Poschiavo" a traditional pasta dish from the highland of Southeast Switzerland. The pasta was made from buckwheat. They boiled cabbages, carrots, and potatos with the pasta, then mixed with lots of cheese. It was interesting for me as Japanese eat buckwheat noodle cakked "Soba". When I put the pasta in my mouth, it was certainly nuckwheat noodle. But soon the taste of cheese overwhelmed. I liked it!

Tomorrow I am visiting Franco in Zurich.

Day 664: 2012年5月22日

Thalwil (Das Haus von Laura & Uwe)
63,290km

It was a beautiful weather. From the morning, Uwe went out to do something with his prospecting job. After he came back, we planned to ride to Schaffausen, but he did not come back even after 12 noon.

So I made researches on the route I would be taking from now on. What I found out was there is a special treaty between Japan and Austria, so even Austria is a apart of Schengen Agreement counries, Japanese can stay there for 180 days.

The problem would be Austria is surrounded by other Schengen countires, so when I would be leaving Schengen area, I would be classified as "Overstayed". I guess I would be leaving Schengen area from Slovenia or Hungary, and I am hoping the immegration process would be casual.

Then another thing I was researching was visa conditions for Iran, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan and Russia. Almost all the countries I am planning to go through after Turkey require a visa...

Especially Iran, to get a temporary vehicle importation permit, I need to have a carnet. Also it looks like I have to apply the Russian visa from Japan, so I would have to go back to Japan next spring to do those beurocratic works.

Anyway, I could find out many things while waiting for Uwe. He came back after 1pm and as I guessed he got the work! From next week, he will be asigne to Mauritania, West Africa as an enginner at a gold mine for 3 weeks. That sounds very interesting.

As he had to sort out a few things at home, we had lunch at the town and stayed at home. I continued my research in the afternoon.

So I did not do any sightseeing today. We would do it tomorow but according to weather focasts, it would be raining....

Day 663: 2012年5月21日

Thalwil (Das Haus von Laura & Uwe)
63,141km to 63,290km = 149km

It was fine in the morning. So Uwe and I went for a riding. I did not know where to go but Uwe had a good idea of it.

We rode to east and cross Lake Zurich on a bridge, then we headed north. We were going to visit Francesca who we met in Sucre, Bolivia.

From a valley to a mountain and to another valley, we rode through curves after curves. We made a short stop to have spring water from Alps. Each villege has spring water and we can drink it for free. It's kind of luxury.
DSCF3123.jpg

Those traditional houses in Germany I lied the style but Swiss houses had good style as well.
DSCF3125.jpg

In the valleys, there were farms and cattle farms, and they smelt like horse and bull shits... As it's spring time, those farmers spreat manuar on their farms, that's why.

We got to the shopping centre where Francesca working. But we found out she was off today! We did not contact her beforehand, that's why.

Anyway, we bought a bread and roasted chiken for lunch. "Roast chicken reminds us of Latin America", both Uwe and I agreed.  It got cloudy while having lunch. So we headed home.

Around 50km from home, it started to rain and soon it was pouring... My riding pants were made with Gore-Tex and waterproof, but it got wet between my legs... When I was riding in the rains in Brazil, I did not get wet. I guess it worn out. From now on if it rains, I have to put the rain pants over the riding pants.

As it was pouring and we would be soaked, so we decided to make a short-cut to cross the lake with a ferry. But when we got closer to the lake, the rain was cleared.

The ferry cost SF$5 each. It took 5 mins or so to get accross the lake.
DSCF3129.jpg

Back home, we got changed to dry cloths, then we went to a supermarket to buy "Cheese Fondu". I really love cheese and I had been wanting to have Cheese Fondu on day, but to this date, I had not had it yet.
It was my first time to have and I would have a proper one in the home land of Fondu, Switzerland!!

After Laura came back from her work, we started to prepare. She put cheese in a pot specially designed for Fondu and let cheese melt.
DSCF3130.jpg

Uwe cut breads in pieces. .
DSCF3131.jpg

Once the cheese was melt, Laura put the pot on the fondu stove. Underneath of the pot, there was an alchole lamp and it would keep the cheese heated.
DSCF3132.jpg

We used special forks to stub the breads and put them into melting cheese. We stired cheese not to let it burned. Once the bread was coated by cheese, we put it into the mouth. Yum.
DSCF3135.jpgDSCF3136.jpg

Tomorrow we are planning to go to Schaffausen. In Schaffausen, there is IWC.

Day 662: 2012年5月20日

Feldkirch, Austria to Thalwil, Switzerland (Das Haus von Laura & Uwe)
62,996km to 63,141km = 145km

It was a fine weather again today. But it was windy. After having breakfast, I said good-bye to Jetzy and left the hostel by 9am. I headed to Leichtenstein.

The border to Leichtenstein was just 3km away from the hostel. I took a photo or the border. It was the 24th country to visit during this trip.
DSCF3111.jpg

Then when I was about to cross the border, there were two border policemen, so I pulled over and greeted them. It was my mistake to pull over... They asked me to show the passport and the driver's license. I showed my International driver's license but they asked for the local one. So I showed my Australian driver's license/
DSCF3112.jpg

They took my passport and licenses and went to the office. One of them were checking out my Aussie license with microscope!! Another one was going through all the passport pages.

I could see their works from the glass, but they told me to go away... So I was wondering if they would give me a troule. Al other cars and motorcycles were passing through without anycheck.

Afer 10mins or so, they came out and asked me to open the panniers. I opened them as I was told, then they returned me the passport and licenses back. They asked e if I would be riding on Motorways in Switzerland. I said "No". They told me that I had to buy a annual pass to use any motorway in Switzerland. Then they let me go.

Leichetenstein was really small country. From the boder, I came to the capital city Vaduz in no time. I saw a castle on the hill top.
DSCF3113.jpg

The Princilpality of Leichtenstein (Fürstentum Liechtenstein) is constitutional monachy ruled by the Princely family of Leichtenstein. Current Price is Hans-Adam II. According to Wikipedia:
"The family comes from Castle Liechtenstein in Lower Austria, which the family possessed from at least 1140 to the 13th century, and from 1807 onwards. Through the centuries, the dynasty acquired vast swathes of land, predominantly in Moravia, Lower Austria, Silesia and Styria, though in all cases, these territories were held in fief under other more senior feudal lords, particularly under various lines of the Habsburg family, to whom several Liechtenstein princes served as close advisors. Thus, and without any territory held directly under the Imperial throne, the Liechtenstein dynasty was unable to meet a primary requirement to qualify for a seat in the Imperial Diet." Cont.... DSCF3118.jpg

I took a right turn in the middle of Vaduz then there was Rhein river. Accross the bridge, I was already in Switzerland. I just rode 15km or so in Leichtenstein. I rode through the valleys of Swiss.

I thought Switzerland was all high up in the mountains, but as I was riding through valleys, the altitude was around 400-500m. And there were warm winds from South, it was really warm.
DSCF3119.jpgDSCF3120.jpg

I rode along side of Lake Walen, then along side of Lake Zurich. Around Lake Zurich, there were many little towns, so I was just riding through towns. This part of Switzerland was totally different from my image of Switzerland.

I was thinking to have a rest at the lake side, but enter lakeside seemed to be private properties, so I could not find any good spot. So I got to Uwe's place before noon. Uwe and his girl friend Laura were not back yet from their holiday, so I went to a supermarket to spend time. But all supermarkets were closed as it was sunday. I went into a cafe, but it was really expensive and I did not have any Swiss-Franc, so I gave up.

I rode back the same road and had a drink at a Mac's. I had a small Coke but it cost SF$3.5 (US$4)!! I checked the price of set menus and each cost SF$12 or so. Very very expensive. I stayed there until 1:30pm, and I got hungry, so I rode back the road again and found a parking area with a lake view. I made sandwitches and read some books.
DSCF3121.jpg

Todayhay fever was killing me. I could not stop sneezing and running nose. I stayed there ti;; 4pm, but it got really cloudy, so I went back to Uwe'S place.

Luckily Uwe and Laura came back 5-10mins after I got there!! It's been a few months since we saw last time in El Calafate, Argentina. He was looking good. I met Laura for the first time. We had coffee and cakes and talked a lot. Then Uwe took to me a chemist to get Hey fever tablets.

We talked about motorcycles, current affairs of Europe, the limitation of staying in Shengen Area countries.

Tomorrow, we will decide what we will do depending on the weather.
