Day 717: 2012年7月14日

Guildford (Mark & Claire's palce)
72,538km

I was planning to Paris today, but as the weather forecast said, it was raining. So I decided to stay one more day with Mark & Claire.

I spent time to complete diaries in English and I caught up quite a bit (but I did not have time to do some).

Before lunch, I went to the town with Mark & Claire for some shopping. The rain had stopped but still cloudy. The photo below is Guildford's famous (?) clock.

We had pizzas for lunch. I was cleaning Camelbak, organising my luggages, booking a ferry for tomorrow etc i the afternoon. So I was kinda busy.

Mark & Claire made me Shepherd's Pie for dinner. Wow, that's abig serve!!

Of course, we could not finish it all. I really liked British Shepherd's pie.

We talked till 11pm or so. It's hard to leave but I have to move on. Tomorrow the weather should be better and I will head to Paris!

Day 716: 2012年7月13日

Guildford (Mark & Claire's palce)
72,538km

The day for Airshow in Farnborough! But the weather was really bad...

I said a good-bye to Lucy and took trains to Waterloo station to catch a long distance train to Farnborough. Kwuan and James were already there.

The train was scheduled at 9:09am but somehow it was delapyed and vanished from the display. Was it cancelled? We did not know as there was no any anouncement... I wondered how they would cope with volume of passengers during Olympic games...

So we took a train to Portsmouth and got off at Woking, then took another one to Farnborough.
DSCF5246.jpg

Once we were o the trains it was pretty fast to get there. We arrived Farnborough before 10am. We took a free shuttle bus to the airfield. There was pretty tight security check before entering the airfield.

The weather was horrible...

It is arial refueling. Flexible refuel hose come out from the chambers and those aircrafts to be refuelled will catch the hoses to get fuel. It can refuel up to 2 fighters at a time. This method is called "Prove-and-drogue". Impressive.

Back at Mark&Claire's place, we talked till late at night.

I am planning to get to Paris tomorrow, but the forecast telling theweather tomorrow would not be good... Tomorrow is Bastille day in France. So it would be good to be there.

Day 715: 2012年7月12日

London (Lucy's palce)
72,538km

It was sunny this morning! Finally!! But I got up late as I was writing diaries till late at night. WIth Lucy, I had a late breakfast. Crumpets with Marmite and butter. Very British.

Lucy and I took a bus to London Bridge. This is "London Bridge". Well, it looked different from how I thought it would be...
DSCF5212.jpg

The bridge can be seen from London Bridge is "Tower Bridge". I thought that was "London Bridge". Current London Bridge was built in 1973, so it is very modern bridge. The stone bridge used before current one was sold to American entreprenuer Robert McCulloch for US$2,460,000 in 1968. It is now rebuilt on Lake Havasu, Nevada.
DSCF5215.jpg

We walked along River Thames towards Tower Bridge. Then Lucy told me "You will like the sign." It was "HORNIMAN"!!! When I was in Ecuador, with Adam I found "Horniman" tea bags in a supermarket. We were really happy to find such tea brand name.

It was a good day and the soft served cone from Mr Whippy was really good!
towerbridgemrwhippy.jpg

(Her Majesty's palace and fortress)」なんです。

This is the "Tower of London". It does not look like a tower at all, in my opinion. The actual name of this is "Her Majesty's palace and fortress". It would be interesting to have a look inside if the tower, but it cost 17 ponds, so I just looked around outside.

We walked along a canal and found a vassel used by the Queen for her Jubilee (maybe).

We caught a train and hopped on a cable car. Well, I was enjoying being a "tourist".

Londoner Lucy was having fun on the cable car too!

This is Old Navy School. I reckon many students from Japan studied there (Japanese Navy adapted British Navy style).

The famous Tea clipper "Cutty Sark". This was one of the fastest Tea Clipper at the end of tea shippment by sailing ships. With her rival Thermopylae, she raced from China to London carrying tea.
509f0cb4.jpeg

Lucy had to go to a bank, so I walked to Greenwich Observatory, hut due toOlympic events preperrations, the park area was closed... And it started to rain, so I took trains back home.

Oh, Lucy intorduced me "Twiglets" - Marmite flavoured snack. It tastes little like Japanese rice cracker at first, but then the taste of Marmite overwhelm in the mouth. It has very strong Marmite flavour, but I like it.

Day 714: 2012年7月11日

London (Lucy's palce)
72,538km

I went to the British Museum with Chavvy this morning. Recently she is visiting the museum quite often to attend "Free tour" by volunteers.

We took trains to Holborn Station - the nearest station to the museum. It was sunny when we left the house, but it was raining a bit in the city...

The main entrance of the British Museum. It's in ancient Greek style. Surprisingly, it was free admission!!
9656d1e7.jpeg

Inside the museum, through the glass roof, sunlight came in. It's modern but still in a harmoney with the ancient Greek style. I like that.

With Chavvy, I joined "Ancient Greek arts" free tour. In this museum, those sculptures of the Parthenon of Athen.

After tour, Chavvi was going to join another tour, so I went to see Ancient Egyptian collections.

Here  Rosetta Stone is displayed!!
821b43a3.jpeg

It was found during Napoleon's 1798 campaign in Egypt. According to Wiki:
The Rosetta Stone is an ancient Egyptian granodiorite stele inscribed with a decree issued at Memphis in 196 BCE on behalf of King Ptolemy V. The decree appears in three scripts: the upper text is Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, the middle portion Demotic script, and the lowest Ancient Greek. Because it presents essentially the same text in all three scripts (with some minor differences between them), it provided the key to the modern understanding of Egyptian hieroglyphs.

But I read that Champollion who was the first one succeeded in translating Ancient Egyptian did not use the text of Rosetta Stone a lot. Well, at least the stone gave all schalors a hope.

Amenhotep III. A mysterious king of 18th dynasty. I am interested in this king - the father of Akenaton, the grandfasther of Tutankhamen. His son Akenaton Amenhotep IV) is known as "Heretic King". But Amenhotep III seems to be as interesting as his son.

There were China, Korea, Southeast Asia, Inda, North America, Mexico and Africa. Too many things to see in a day, indeed.

It was raining when I came out of te museum. I waited for a while until the rain eased and I took trains to Lucy's place. I met Lucy in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile 9months ago!! My friend Ohaggi (Kumi) was with her and she introduced Lucy to me.

We talked a while at home and when the rain stopped, we went for a walk. There was a canal and we walked along.

Day 713: 2012年7月10日

London (Chavvi & Pierre's palce)
72,538km

I got up at 5am(!) and caught 5:50am train to London Waterloo. I nearly missed the train!

I got to the hotel where Kwun and James staying at 7am. We waited at the robby for a pickup bus. The bus came to pick up up at 7:15am on time. If I missed the train, I would have missed the bus too. It was close.

Today, Amber - the friend of Kwun - joined us. She pretended to be scared of me holding a banana like a pistol.  Or was she really scared??
DSCF4974.jpg

We hopped on a tour bus to Stonehenge.

I went there a few days ago, but I saw it from outside of the fence. So today I was going to see it close up. ut the weather was bad...
DSCF4982.jpg

There were some objects surrounding Stonehenge. We did not know what they were. Some mortar look-a-like thingies with buckets were placed between footpath and Stonehenge, blocking our views.... Later we asked the guide and he said a French tour operator is doing a light up tour, and they light up the "mortar" look-a-like thingies. How National Trust allow the operator doing this kind of thing??
DSCF4986.jpg

Mr. Sheep and Amber. Isn't she cute?
DSCF4994.jpg

I heard from some people that Stonehende is actually smaller than many people imagine, and I thought so too. But still it would have been hard work tobring those stones for 200km.
DSCF5006.jpg

There is no definite theory of how / why Stonehenge was built. A sundial, a calendar, a religious celemonial palce, a ruler's showing off monument etc, there are lots of theories made. It is the centuries long mystery.

Well, something is better to remain as a mystery.

We hopped on the bus and it took us to Bath. Here a large scale public bath was built during Roman occupation. It is said "the only" hot spring in England.

This is Bath Abbey.
DSCF5009.jpg

We visited Roman Bath first. Now it is a museum later than public bath, but they display those artifacts from Roman period.
DSCF5011.jpg

The main bath. In the Roman period, men and women were bathing together.
DSCF5017.jpg

There were not only a bath but a huge sauna facility. Romans, they really loved bathing and it was probably the best way to forget the chilly British winter for a moment. It's interesting for me that there were a few cities / towns named "Banos" in Latin America. Same meaning as "Bath".

They with Amber, I visited Abbey. Inside of Abbey was similar to that of Nantes Cathedral, and I like this style. It's simple but solemn.
DSCF5027.jpg

The pipeorgan was very impresive too.
DSCF5029.jpg

Rejoined with Kwun and James, we all walked to the Royal Cresent. On the way, we found "Gay street".

Bath was really pretty city. If it was beter weather, it would be much better. On the way back to London, I slept on the bus almost all the way.

It was my first Chinese BBQ since I left Australia, but it was not that good...
