Day28: 2010年8月21日
Yellowknife to Desperation Lake
19,014 to 19,117km = 103km
今日は朝ゆっくりです。夜はさむかった！途中で目が覚めてなかなか寝付けなかったので寝不足です。
天気は晴れ。テントと寝袋を天日干しにします。
街に繰り出して買い出しとコインランドリーで洗濯。駐車場でパスタを作って昼メシ。うん、今日は天気良いのでオーロラ昨日より見えそうです。夕飯用に今まで食べたくて仕方なかったAAAグレードのステーキ用ビーフを買いました。楽しみだな。
街の明かりが無い方がオーロラ見易いとのことなので、イエローナイフの東70キロくらいのDesperation Lakeまで行きます。ここで道は途絶えています。湖も綺麗ですしなかなか良い所です。松茸がここら辺でうじゃうじゃ生えているそうです。
しかし雲がここでは多く、松茸も見つからないので少し西へ戻ったキャンプ場(Reid Lake Territorial Park)に泊まることにしました。
テントを張る前に松茸狩り。見た目は松茸なのですが、全く匂いがありません。Sushi Northのオーナーさんは匂いをかげばわかると言っていましたが、これじゃわかりません。キャンプ場の管理人に聞きましたが、食べられるかわからないと言っています。大事をとって食べないことに。
テントを張ってAAAグレードのビーフをついに食べます。レアでたべましたが、肉が柔らかくて美味しい！
メシを食べてしばらくしたら雲が出て来ました。あんなに晴れていたのに...。10時ごろになるとすっかり空は雲で覆われてしまいました。オーロラ、絶望的です。
とりあえず12時になったら一回起きて様子を見ようということにして就寝。
12時になっても状況は同じです。今日はオーロラ見えませんでした。
しかも夜半雨が降って来ました。たいした雨ではなかったので問題無いですけど。
さて、明日はオーロラ見えるかな？

Yellowknife to Desperation Lake

It was really cold last night. I woke up in the middle of night and could not go back to sleep as it was too cold.
It is fine day today. I dried my tent and sleeping bag under the good sun light.
We went to the town and bought foods for tonight and did some laundry. We bought Canadian AAA grade beef lib for our dinner. It's gotta be good.
As we heard Northern Lights can be seen more clearly outside of Yellowknife, we went to Desperation Lake, 70km east of Yellowknife. Also the boss of Sushi North told us that we can pick lots of pine tree mushroom around the area.
The lake is beautiful but it was cloudy around the lake, so we decided to go back little westwards. We decided to stay at a campground (Reid Lake Territorial Park).
We were searching for the mushrooms and found many, just look like ones found in Japan. But those do not have that distinctive smell. The boss told us we can tell it or not by just sniffing it, but it has no smell at all. We asked the campground care takers, but even they did not know if we can eat those mushrooms, so we did not eat them.
After setting up tents, we were finally cooking AAA grade beef. I cooked it blue rare and it was so tender and juicy!
It was getting cloudy around 8pm and by 10pm the sky was covered by cloud. At this stage, we were unlikely to see Northern Lights tonight. It was so fine in day time!
We went to sleep and woke up at 12 midnight to see any luck. But the sky was full of cloud. Later of the night, it rained a bit. Hummm, this is the nature.
Hopefully, we can see Northern Lights tomorrow.

Day27: 2010年8月20日
Mannings to Yellowknife
18,084 to 19,014 = 930km
今日は気温差が無いせいかテントに露がついてないです。風は止みましたが曇り空。
8時には準備が完了したので出発です。
ワシが運転して200キロ先のHigh Levelという街でコーヒーブレイク。ここでシュン君に運転を交代して更に先に進みます。
12時過ぎに北緯60度線を超えます。ここがアルバータ州とノースウェスト準州の境にもなっています。記念撮影をしてここで昼食。ソーセージのあまりとパンでホットドッグを作りました。
そこからフェリーまで300キロくらい走ります。運転をワシに交代して走ります。フェリーでMcKenzy川を越えればイエローナイフまで300キロくらい。
バイソンを5回くらい目撃。しかも2回は群でした。
6時過ぎにイエローナイフに到着。お祝いにSushi Northでお寿司を食べました。まさかここまで来てお寿司を食べられるとは思ってみませんでした。久しぶりのお寿司は美味しかったです。お店の他人に色々オーロラについて情報をいただきました。
キャンプ場に行ってテントを張りオーロラに備えます。傾向では11時から2時くらいに見えるとの事なので長い夜になりそうです。10時過ぎまで明るいですが、流石に寒いです。蚊も多いですしね。
今は12時過ぎ。まだオーロラはすがたを現しません。
ようやく1時過ぎになってオーロラ姿を現しました！あまりハッキリとは見えませんが間違いなくオーロラです。3人でハイファイブ！しばらくオーロラを見つめます。姿はだんだん変わって行きますがうっすらとカーテン状になっていてなかなか写真で見るようにはなりません。
まぁ、初日なのでこんなものでしょう。明日はもっとハッキリと観たいですね。
Day27: 20Aug2010
Mannings to Yellowknife
18,084 to 19,014 = 930km
This morning no dew was covering my tent. The wind stopped but it was cloudy.
We left the campground after 8am.
I drove the car till the town of High Level, 200km from Mannings. We had a coffee break there and Shun took the drover's position.
Just after noon we passed Sixties Parallel where also is the border of Alberta and Northwest Territory.
We took some photos there and had a quick lunch.
Another 300km to the ferry crossing Mackenzie River. I took the driver seat again here.
After the ferry, it is just around 300km to Yellowknife. We were almost there. We saw buffalos many times. Twice were herds of them. Shun and Akko were so excited to see them!
We arrived at Yellowknife after 6pm. We had dinner at Sushi North to celebrate our arrival here. It was nice to have Sushi after such long drive! We got some tips about Northern Lights from the staffs.
Today we are camping at a campground outside of the town. After setting up our tents, we wait for Northern Lights. It was still bright after 10pm and lots of mosquitos! And it got really chilly after the sunset.
We waited until 1:00am and finally they appeared! They were not that clear but definitely the Northern Lights. We were watching them for a while, seeing them changing their appearance.
Tomorrow we hope we can see them more clearly.

Lacombe to Mannings
17,348 to 18,084 = 736km
今日はテントに露がすごいです。こんなに露がついたのは初めてです。やはり気温差が激しいからでしょうか。
7時に起きて朝食を食べてガンバってテントを乾かしたのですが生乾きです。もっとかわかしたかったのですが、今日は距離を稼がなければいけませんのでグズグズしてられません。9時に出発。ワシの運転です。左ハンドルは初めてですので緊張しますね。
Alberta(アルバータ)州の州都Edmonton(エドモントン)まで約2時間。この先あまり大きな街が無さそうなので、早めの昼メシと買い出し。
流石に州都なのでそこそこ栄えてます。ここを抜けるのに結構時間がかかってしまいました。
ここからSwan Hill(スワンヒル)という街までは煙が充満してました。また山火事ですかね。
ここでシュン君と運転を交代して更に先に進みます。ここまで来ると街もまばらです。ど田舎です。途中でコーヒーブレイクをしたりしますが基本的には走りっぱなしです。
最後はアッコちゃんに運転を交代してPeace River(ピースリバー)を100キロくらい過ぎたMannings(マニングス)という街でキャンプ。3人で10ドルと格安です！
雲行きが怪しいし風も強いですが、テントを張ってパスタを作って夕食。独りでキャンプの時はなかなか料理らしい料理をしないのですが、3人で作ると簡単ですし楽しいですね。
シャワーもあるのですが寒いので浴びないで顔と足だけ洗って就寝です。
明日はYellowknife(イエローナイフ)到着予定です。900キロくらいあります。

Lacombe to Mannings
17,348 to 18,084 = 736km
This morning the tent was soaked by dew. I've never seen much dew all over my tent. I guess it's because of sudden drop in temp at the night.
Anyway, we couldn't dry our tents properly but had to take off as we had to cover the long distance today. I was the one taking the wheel this morning.
I've never driven left handle car before so I was a little cautious.
It took 2 hours to Edmonton, the capital city of Alberta. We had lunch and bought some groceries here. As it is a quite big city, we spent long time to get through.
From Edmonton to Swan Hill, smoke was covering all over the place! I guess another big bush fire.
Shun took the wheel from here.
The distance between towns are getting longer and longer. We had a coffee break or two, but generally just driving to get closer to Yellowknife.
Akko was driving last 200km of today's drive. We stopped at Mannings around 100km North of Pease River and are camping here. It costs CAD10 a site. So we paid CAD3.33 each!
The sky is cloudy and it is very windy but we built up the tents and cooked pasta with smoked sausages. It was really yummy! I hardly cook proper meals when camping alone. So it is another fun part of traveling with companions.
It's cold tonight, so we didn't take shower and went to bed.
Tomorrow we will be in Yellowknife.

Day25: 2010年8月18日
Calgary to Lacombe
17,116km to 17,348km = 232km
今日は北に向かうにしろ南に向かうにしろ宿をチェックアウトするので朝から荷物をまとめます。
10時にDaveに電話。バイクを預かってくれるとのこと！ありがとう。
早速シュン君とアッコちゃんと車を取りに空港へ。電車賃2.75ドルなんですけど、券売機札が使えません。仕方が無いので無賃乗車です。しばらく電車を乗ったら今度はバスに乗り換えです。
空港についたらAvisへ。結構デカイ車(シボレー・インパラ 3.5リッターV6)なんですけど、13日借りて保険込みで788ドルです。まあまあ安く借りれました。
一旦宿に戻りバイクに乗ってDaveの店へ。快く預かってくれました。
すでに1時半です。Chinatownに行って昼飯。9.99ドルの食べ放題に行ったんですが、殆ど残ってないので4ドルで食べさせてくれました。やったね。チョット食い過ぎました。
それからキャンプ用品店に行ってシュン君たちの寝袋などを調達。
結局出発したのは4時半です。
しかも踏切で貨物列車に7分くらい足止めされたり、帰宅ラッシュに巻き込まれたりでなかなか進めません。カルガリーがワシらを逃がさないのか⁉
渋滞を抜けたら一気に距離を稼ぎます。スーパーに買い出しに行きたかったんですが、なかなかスーパーがありません。結局Red Deerという結構大きな街まで言ってようやく見つけました。Safe Wayです。クラブ会員になると色んな商品が安く買えるので、早速会員になりました。無料です。
それから18キロくらい走ってLacombeという街のキャンプ場でキャンプ。3人で15ドルです。ヤッパリ人数が多いと安く済みますね。
夕飯はパンとゆで玉子とサラダ。こうして仲間と旅するのも楽しいな。
明日はもっと距離を稼ぐぞ！
Day25: 2010年8月18日
Calgary to Lacombe
17,116km to 17,348km = 232km
I wasn't still sure if I'm heading to Yellowknife or the States, but I had to check out the hostel, I packing up stuffs.
I called Dave at 10am and he said ok to leave my GS there! Thanks, Dave.
Shun, Akko and I went to the airport to pick up the car. We caught a train and a bus to get there. The train ticket costs CAD2.75 but the machine does not take any bill, so we got on board anyway.
Arriving at the airport, we went to AVIS counter and went through paper works and got the car, Chevrolet Impala 3.5Litre V6. It's a full size sedan and costs CAD788 for 13days with insurance, so I guess it was a good deal.
Back to the hostel and picked up my GS and went to Dave's workshop. He stores my bike there happily. What a nice man!
It was almost 2pm, so went to Chinatown to have lunch. As it was nearly the end of lunch time, so we got a bargain at Chinese buffet. We had it fir CAD4.00!
Then we went to Mountain Equipment Co. (MEC) to get Shun and Akko's sleeping bags and other stuffs.
By the time when finally we left Calgary was after 4:30pm. Also we stacked at a train crossing and caught in a traffic.
Once we got passed the traffic, we drove smoothly. We bought food stuffs at Safe Way in Red Deer.
18km or so from Red Deer, at town if Lacombe, we found a camping ground at CAD15 per site. So It is really cheaper to go around with others.
Tomorrow we have to travel further. I will be driving in the morning.

渋滞を抜けたら一気に距離を稼ぎます。スーパーに買い出しに行きたかったんですが、なかなかスーパーがありません。結局Red Deerという結構大きな街まで言ってようやく見つけました。Safe Wayです。クラブ会員になると色んな商品が安く買えるので、早速会員になりました。無料です。
夕飯はパンとゆで玉子とサラダ。こうして仲間と旅するのも楽しいな。
明日はもっと距離を稼ぐぞ！
Day25: 2010年8月18日
Calgary to Lacombe
17,116km to 17,348km = 232km
I wasn't still sure if I'm heading to Yellowknife or the States, but I had to check out the hostel, I packing up stuffs.
I called Dave at 10am and he said ok to leave my GS there! Thanks, Dave.
Shun, Akko and I went to the airport to pick up the car. We caught a train and a bus to get there. The train ticket costs CAD2.75 but the machine does not take any bill, so we got on board anyway.
Arriving at the airport, we went to AVIS counter and went through paper works and got the car, Chevrolet Impala 3.5Litre V6. It's a full size sedan and costs CAD788 for 13days with insurance, so I guess it was a good deal.
Back to the hostel and picked up my GS and went to Dave's workshop. He stores my bike there happily. What a nice man!
It was almost 2pm, so went to Chinatown to have lunch. As it was nearly the end of lunch time, so we got a bargain at Chinese buffet. We had it fir CAD4.00!
Then we went to Mountain Equipment Co. (MEC) to get Shun and Akko's sleeping bags and other stuffs.
By the time when finally we left Calgary was after 4:30pm. Also we stacked at a train crossing and caught in a traffic.
Once we got passed the traffic, we drove smoothly. We bought food stuffs at Safe Way in Red Deer.
18km or so from Red Deer, at town if Lacombe, we found a camping ground at CAD15 per site. So It is really cheaper to go around with others.
Tomorrow we have to travel further. I will be driving in the morning.

今日は朝起きたら曇っています。まぁ遠出をしないので問題ないでしょう。
10時にDaveの店Anderwerksに到着。朝から忙しそうです。
しばらくバイクを取りにいたBayotと話をしてました。
結局11時過ぎからワシのバイクのサービスが始まりました。メカニックはMikeです。よろしく頼むよ！
まずはオイル交換からです。Touratechのアンダーガードを付けているんですけど、外すのが結構大変です。
バルブクリアランスの調整やエアフィルターの掃除をしたところでお昼時間になりました。
ピザを買ってきてくれたのでそれで昼飯です。ピザおいしかったなぁ。
2時から作業再会。最後はシンクロナイゼーションをして終了。
ワシが横で見ていていろいろ質問してたせいか、結構時間がかかってしまいました。
査定よりも高くなってしまいましたが、いろいろ勉強できたのでよかったです。
カナダ2日目にAraiのヘルメットのバイザーを留めるネジを紛失したんですけど、Daveが紹介してくれたUniversal Cycleでタダでもらいました。しかも新品のヘルメットからネジを取ってくれたんですよ！ありがとう！！
それからAMA（JAFのアルバータ版）でアメリカ、メキシコの地図をもらいました。これで明日からのルートを決めます。
宿にもどったらシュン君とアッコちゃんはYellowknifeにレンタカーで行くことに決めたそうです。
なんとワシも一緒に行かないかとお誘いが！
すっごく魅力的な話だな。3人で車とガソリン代をシェアすれば安く済みますしね。
問題はどこにバイクを置くかですね。Daveが預かってくれればいいんですけど。
そんなこんなで、バイクを預けられるかどうかで明日北と南にいくか決まります！
これぞ旅ですね。何が起こるかわからない！

Today I went to Dave'S workshop Anderwerks at 10am.
It was busy day from morning and I waited there for a while.
I was talking to Boyot, an R1150R rider,for a while.
After 11am, Mike started to work on my GS.
Starting from changingoil, adjusting valve clearance, cleaning arifilter etc.
Thenit was time for a luch break. The guys at the shop bought a pizza for me. Itwas really god pizza.
At 2pm restarting the work. He finished off with synchonisation, and it's all done.
As I was watching and asking question beside him, ot took longer tme than usual I guess.
But I could learn a lot from it. So it's all good.
I lost a screw to hold the visor on my helmet on the 2nd day in Canada. At Universal Cycle, Dave recommended me to go, I could get the screw for free! They tok out one from a ew helmet and gave it to me. What a nice people! Thanks!!
After that I went to AMA to get free map of the States and Mexico. Now I can plan my next route.
Back in the hostel, Shun and Akko decided to rent a car to Yellowknife.
They asked me to go with them.
It is actually a good deal. We can share the car and gas, so it wouldn't be expensive.
The issue is where I store my GS. If Dave can store her for me, I will go with Shun and Akko.
So depending on if I can store my GS, I will be heading North or South.
This is the fun part of the trip. You don't know what wil happen next!
