Day37: 2010年8月30日

Salt Lake City to Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park
14,612 to 15,174km = 562km

今日は朝方から激しい雨です。雷が鳴っているので直ぐに止むとは思いますが。

7時頃には雨が止んだので、起きてトイレに行って出て来たらまた降って来ました。かなり激しく。仕方が無いのでインターネットをして時間を潰しました。そうそう、昨晩も寝る前になってようやくネットに繋がったんですよ。

8時半過ぎにようやく小降りになったので、今しか無い！とテントをたたんで出発です。テントはかなり濡れた状態です…。

Redwood RoadにあるBMWディラーに行ったら月曜日は休み…。しかし中に人がいるので聞いてみると、彼らも休みなんだけど特別にメンテしてもらってるとのこと。試しにメカニックに聞いてみると、ハンドルを真っ直ぐにするのくらいならやってくれるとのこと！ラッキー。

待ってる間、他のお客さんと話していたら、ブライズ渓谷国立公園(Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park)良いとの事なのでそれで行くことに。

何回かタイヤを壁にガンガンやったんですけど、結局直らず。ワシも同じこと心見たんだけど…。仕方が無いのでフォークのクランプを緩めて調整。何回か試したらようやく真っ直ぐになりました。しかもタダでやってくれました！ありがとう。

タイヤはまだ大丈夫と判断をもらいましたので、ラスベガスまでこのまま行くことに。

雨も止んだ見たいですし、さて行きますか。時間は10時半過ぎです。






最初は15号線で飛ばします。Nephiという街で89号線に乗り換えSigurdで24号線に。Torreyで12号線に入ります。道沿いの風景はハンパ無く良いですよ！グランドキャニオンもこんな感じなのかな？なんて思わせる絶景に継ぐ絶景！しかもワインディングが多いので走ってて楽しいです。曲がり角を過ぎるとまた絶景が待ってるという感じです。ここもオススメです！あのお客さんのお陰ですね。




 

ブライス渓谷国立公園の入園料は12ドル。North Campgroundでキャンプ。15ドルです。テントを建ててSunset Pointで夕暮れの景色を楽しみます。素晴らしい景色です。これはカナダには無かったなァ。アメリカ、やるな。

明日は公園内を見て回って、出来ればグランドキャニオンのノースリム(North Rim)に行きたいです。


Day37: 30Aug2010

Salt Lake City to Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park

It started raining early in the morning. It stopped around 7am and I got up and went to restroom. When I came out, it was raining hard... 

I killed time surfing Net. Oh last night just before I went to sleep, I could connect to the network. 

Around 8:30am, the rain got smaller, so I geared up and went to the BMW Dealer on Redwood Road. My tent was still very wet...

Arrived at the dealer, it is closed on Monday! Ouch! 
But there were people inside and they were getting their bikes survived. I asked the mechanic if he can aline my handle bar. He said Ok! 

While waiting guys told me to take the route 12, if I am going to Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park. 

The mechanic tried to fix the alinement by whacking the tire against the wall. But it did not work. He loosen the cramp of the fork and finally it was alined after a few trial. And he did it for free! Thanks!

Now it's 10:30am. The rain stopped and I took off. 
First I took the route 15 till Nephi, then the route 89 to Sigurd, then the route 24 to Torrey. 

The scenery of the route 12 is awesome! Corner after corner, it presents great views. The windings are also fun to ride through. This is the one of the best road I've ever ridden (in term of scenery)!
Thanks to those guys at the BMW dealer, I really enjoyed riding through the route 12.

The entrance fee for Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park is $12. Tenting at a campground costs $15. I am camping at North Campground. 

After setting up the tent, I went to Sunset Point. The view is magnificent! I cannot describe how wonderful the US Nat'l Parks are. 

Tomorrow I will go through the park and hopefully get to The North Rim of Grand Canyon.

Day36: 2010年8月29日

Yellowstone Nat'l Park to Salt Lake City
13,941km to 14,612km = 671km

今日は晴れ！せっかくなので89号でソルトレイクシティーまで行くことにします。途中にグランドテットン国立公園(Grand Teton Nat'l Park)もありますので、15号で行くよりは楽しいはず。

昨晩雨が降ったせいでテントを乾かすのが一苦労。9時過ぎの出発となりました。

昨日雨であまり見れなかった所を走り風景を楽しみます。公園の南の出口付近でデッカいバイソンが道の真ん中を歩いています。車もワシも停車してバイソンが立ち去るのを見守りました。ワシの横スレスレでバイソンは歩き去りました。かなりの迫力です。

公園内は45マイル(70キロ)制限なので出るのに時間がかかりました。もう11時過ぎです。

イエローストーンを出ると直ぐにグランドテットン国立公園です。山々が素晴らしい！カナディアンロッキーを彷彿させてくれます。ワインディングもあり、ここはオススメです。アメリカやるなぁ。

公園内で時間がかかった分、バシバシ走ります。ワイオミング州からアイダホ州に入り更ユタ州へ。三州を跨ぎます。ベアレイク(Bear Lake)が青くて綺麗でした。写真が撮れなかったのが残念です。

ユタ州に入ったばかりの街ガーデンシティーでラズベリーシェイクを食べました。はい、飲むんじゃなくてたべるんです。殆どソフトクリーム状ですこのシェイク。

後はひたすらソルトレイクシティーに向かって走ります。途中のマックでインターネットをして、BMWディラーの場所を確認。パニアを破損して転けた際にハンドルがちょっと曲がったんですよね。何度か直そうと心見たのですが、固くて直りません。フロントタイヤもそろそろ交換時なのでついでに直してもらいます。

ソルトレイクシティーに到着したのは7時過ぎです。KOAというキャンプ場があったのでココにしました。高いのは知っていたのですが、28ドルもします。3日ぶりにシャワーも浴びれるしインターネットもタダなので、いいか。洗濯もしよう。

しかし！インターネットがつながりません。シャワーと洗濯はちゃんとしましたが。
明日は何処まで行けるかな？

Day36: 29Aug2010

Yellowstone Nat'l Park to Salt Lake City
13,941km to 14,612km = 671km

It was sunny! So I was to take the route 89 to Salt Lake City. There is Grand Teton Nat'l Park on the way, so it's more fun than the route 15.

As it rained last night, I spent long time trying to dry my tent. I could take off after 9am. 

As the speed limit in the park is 45mile/h(70km/h), it was after 11am when I left the park. But I enjoyed the scenery I could not see much yesterday. 

Just before the exit if the park, a big bull bison was walking in the middle of the road. He just walked pass beside me. Was little scary. 

South gate of Yellowstone Nat'l Park is just minutes away from Grand Teton Nat'l Park. 
The mountains (Grand Teton Range) are great. They remind me if Canadian Rocky. Also the route has lots of winding, so I highly recommend this route. 

Today I rode through Wyoming, Idaho and Utah, 3 States! 
Bear Lake lying between Idaho and Utah is so beautiful. I could not take any photo though.

I stopped at McDonald's for WiFi. I checked the location of the BMW dealer in SLC. My handle bar is not aligned, after the drop at Teslin. As the front tire is almost due, so I will change it and also align the handle bar. 

Arrived at SLC after 7pm. I found KOA campground. I knew it would be expensive, but I wanted to take shower and do laundry. Also here has free WiFi. It costs $28....

But I could not log on to WiFi! Anyway I took shower and did laundry. 

I wonder how far can I go tomorrow. That's depending on if I can get the tire changed soon.

Day35: 2010年8月28日

Yellowstone Nat'l Park : Day 2

今朝は晴れです。7時に起きたので、朝飯を食べた後近くの丘に登ったりしました。


初めにMammoth Hot Springsに行きます。温泉に入れるのかな、と思いきや入れません。しかし温泉が作り出した風景は対したものです。テラス状になった斜面を熱湯が流れる様は見応えがあります。 だんだんと雲が多くなってきました。先を急ぎましょう。


























次の見所はNorris Geyser Basinです。青色温泉やぐつぐつ煮たった温泉、水蒸気が勢いよく吹き出でる穴、そして間欠泉。ここはいいですね。間欠泉の一つSteamboat Geyserは4日から50年に一片大噴射するそうです。大噴射はあの有名なOld Faithful Geyserの3倍の高さになるそうです。最後の大噴射は2005年だそうです。残念ながら大噴射は見れませんでした。ちなみにGeyserとは間欠泉のことです。

ここまでは晴れていたのですが、ついに雨。この旅最初の本降りです。直ぐに雨合羽を羽織ったので濡れる心配はありません。これでバイクが洗われるなでかえって雨は歓迎です。

NorrisからMadisonまでは道が工事中なので結構足止めを喰らいました。 Fountain Paint PotやMidway Geyser Basinなどなかなか見所が満載。雨が降ってましたが楽しめますね。

お昼過ぎにOld Faithfulに到着。ブリトーを2つ買ってお昼に。2つで3.98ドルでした。そしてOld Faithful Geyserへ。そろそろ噴射が始まるのか人が沢山です。でもなんか嵐が来そうな雲行きです。噴射が始まった途端に雨が降り始めました。噴射はなかなかすごいです。さすがに有名なだけはあります。噴射が収まりかけるとみんな屋根のある所に逃げて行きました。ワシもビジターセンターで雨宿りです。

何だか風邪をひいたみたいです。インフォメーションを見るとOld Faithful Geyserの次の噴射は3時55分とあります。嵐が来たので身動きが取れないので、次と噴射まで待つことに。 時間が来ると雨が止まりました！しかも今回の噴射は前回のよりも大きいです。待ってて良かった。

雨が止んだ所で次を目指します。 しかし出発した途端雨が降り始めました。Yellowstone Lakeは殆ど何も見ずに過ぎ去りました。Mud Volcanoは雨が土砂降りでしたがバイクを降りて見学。なかなか迫力ありますな。あとは、Yellowstone RiverのUpper Fallsを見学してテントに戻ります。 公園内だけを走ったのに235キロも走りました。大体80キロで巡航しているので、燃費がいいです。バイクのコンピュータに、よるとリッター当たり22.7キロでした。

インスタントラーメンの夕飯を食べてイエローナイフで貰っユンケル黄帝液を飲んで寝る準備です。隣りのハーレー乗りのおっちゃんはソルトレイクシティー(Salt  Lake City)からなのでどのルートで行けばいいか、BMWのディラーは何処かなど聞いたりしました。 明日はソルトレイクシティーです。


Day35: 2010年8月28日

Yellowstone Nat'l Park : Day 2

This morning it was fine. But it was deceptive. 

I went to see Mammoth Hot Springs. Hot Springs formed terraces and they are beautiful. Hot water running down the terraces is quite a view.  It got cloudy, so I'd better hurry. 

Next attraction was Norris Geyser Basin. Here has blue hot springs, boiling springs, steaming holes and geysers. One if the geysers, Steamboat Geysers, if it erupts, the water reaches 3 times higher than Old Faithful Geysers. But it is unpredictable. The last major erupt was in 2005.  I enjoyed walking around the basin. So many of different thermal activities can be seen here. 

It started raining. Soon I wore the rain jacket on top. So no worry to get wet. Between Norris and Madison, road works going on. So I was delayed in the rain.  Fountain Paint Pot and Midway Geyser Basin were fun even though it was raining. 

Arrived at Old Faithful after 1:30pm, I had lunch first. Then walked to Old Faithful Geyser. There were lots of people waiting for an eruption. Looked like it was coming in a minute. And yes, it erupted! At the same time rain poured. After the eruption ceased, I went into Information Centre. I felt little dizzy. Have I caught flu!? Thunder storm came and I stayed there and had a good rest.  The next eruption was 3:55pm, so I decided to wait for that.  When the time came, the rain stopped. The eruption this time was much bigger than last one. Luckily I waited for this.

Now I headed to Yellowstone Lake. But the rain was pourimg again, so could not see much. I made quick stops at Mud Volcano ans Upper Falls, then went b
back to the cam site. Spoke with the Herley guys from Salt Lake City and they told me to take the route 89, going throgh Grand Teton Nat'l Park to SLC.

As I wasn't feeling so well, I went to sleep early.

Day34: 2010年8月27日

Harlowton to Yellowstone Nat'l Park
13,262km to  13,706km = 444km

今日は曇りです。そんなに暑くならないように願います。
8時20分に出発し最寄りの大都市Billingsを目指します。 Billingsには10時半頃に到着。ここではやりたいことが2つあります。先ずは帰りの航空券のキャンセル。アシアナ航空に電話です。オペレーター曰くキャンセルにはメールを送る必要があるとのこと。面倒だなぁ。

ガソリンスタンドから電話してたんですが、我がGS注文の的です。色々話しかけられます。アメリカ人は話好きだな。 もう一つは両替。銀行を探しましたが、走っているとなかなか見つからないですね。

インフォメーションセンターがあったのでイエローストーンの情報をも仕入れに行きました。そしたらWiFiがあるじゃないですか！ 早速アシアナ航空にメール。ブログをアップしたりしてたらもうお昼の時間です。なかなか写真がアップ出来ないのが残念です。もう暫くお待ちください。

お昼は待ちに待ったBurger Kingで。ダブルワッパーを頼みます。オーストラリアのよりデカイです。流石アメリカ。お腹いっぱい。






銀行はあったのですが駐車ができなかったので、諦めました。 ここから212号線でイエローストーンへ。ここはBeartooth Passと言ってワインディングが盛りだくさんな峠道。最高点で10,947㌳あります。多分3,300 メートルだと思います。かなりの標高ですね。 景色も良いし、道も整備されてるし最高ですね。Brianが絶賛する訳だ。ここは本当にオススメです。 上の方に上がると流石に寒くなります。木々も無くなり荒涼とした景色が拡がります。風がハンパなく強いです。

峠を下りTop of the worldでステッカーを買いました。そうそう、Beartoothではアライグマがよく轢かれて死んでます。可哀想に。 ここからCooke Cityまで暫く走り給油。ここで両替をしてイエローストーンに向かいます。

国立公園の入場料は20ドルです。チョット高いけれど、9月2日まで有効なのでまあいいでしょう。 園内に入ってから暫くするとバイソンの群れが！それも数がハンパないです。今まで道端で見た群れとは規模が違います。 硫黄の臭いがします。あー、やって来たんだな、イエローストーンに。

あるルックアウトで日本人2人に出会いました。ラスベガスで大学に通っていたケンジ君とミナちゃんです。ミナちゃんは日本で就職して休暇でアメリカに戻って来たそうです。ケンジ君はアメリカで就職活動中。話しているうちに仲良くなりラスベガスに行く際には泊めて頂けるとのこと！ありがたい！

Tower Fallを見てから今日のキャンプ場Mammoth Hot Springsに行きました。ここでエルクの群れが。カナダで見れなかったので嬉しいですね。バイクに乗ってたんで写真は撮れまけんでした。 Mammothでは何週間か前クマに襲われて1人亡くなったらしいです。キャンプ場にもクマが来ないように食べ物とかの管理について厳しく定められてます。 隣りのハーレー乗りと話しをしたり、公園のレンジャーの話を聞いたりしてよるを過ごしました。 明日は間欠泉を見に行きます。楽しみだなァ。


Day 34: 27Aug2010

Harlowton to Yellowstone Nat'l Park

It's clouded this morning. I hoped it wouldn't get too hot today. 
Left the campground at 8:20am and arrived Billings 10:30am. 

In Billings, I wanted to do 2 things: Canceling the air ticket home and exchange Canadian Dollars to US Dollars.  I called Asiana Air, but the operator told me to send an e-mail for the cancelation. That's not easy.  I was at a Gas station and my GS was getting lots of attentions. People ask me questions. I found Americans are talkative and kind.  Looking for a bank but I came to the edge of the city. I found Information Centre, so I went in for information on Yellowstone. 

Here has free WiFi connection! I sent an e-mail to Asiana air and updated my blog.  It was nearly lunch time, so I went to Burger King. I have been waiting for eating at BK in the States! Double Whapper seems lots bigger than Aussie one. It's too big! I found a bank but I could not park nearby, so I took off. 

The route 212, Beartooth Pass is an awesome route to ride. Nice scenery and lots of windings. No wonder Brian said here it the best road to ride. If you are going to Yellowstone, I recommend you to take this route.  The highest point of the pass is 10,947ft. It got really cold up there. There is no tree around and so windy. The view is amazing.

Fueled up in Cooke City and entered Yellowstone Nat'l Park. The entrance fee is $20 but it's valid till 2Sep.  Riding through the park, I found huge herd of Bisons! Countless number of bisons can be seen.  At Soda Butte, it smelt sulfur. Surely I am in Yellowstone. 

I met 2 Japanese, Kenji and Mina at a look out. They were studying at Uni in Las Vegas. Kenji offered me accommodation when I come to Las Vegas. Nice!

After seeing Tower Fall, I came to Mammoth Hot Springs where I stay tonight. People told me that a couple weeks ago, a person was killed by a bear here.  We have to manage our foods properly not to attract any bear.  Tomorrow I will see geysers. I'm very excited.

Day33: 2010年8月26日

Canada: Fort MacLeod to US border Carway

US: Carway to Harlowton, Montana
12,773km to 13,262km = 487.9km

今日はいよいよカナダを去る日。7時に起きて準備を始ます。昨日貰ったストラップを使ってパニアの上にテントなどをくくりつけます。色々調整してるうちに9時半になってしまいました。
給油をして出発。国境まで87キロです。11時に国境に到着。カナダ側のお土産屋さんで残っているコインで買い物します。

カナダ側でカルネにサインとスタンプを貰いアメリカ側へ。すんなりとアメリカに入国。モンタナ州です。
しかしアメリカ滞在はシアトルに入ってから90日間の10月23日までと変わらずでした。また90日間もらえると思ってたのにな。

ロッキー山脈を右手に中々良い眺めです。カナダ側は2号線でしたがアメリカ側は89号線に番号が変わります。
今日は暑い！そして風が強い！
そのせいか燃費が悪いです。

先ずはGreat Fallsを目指します。国境からBrowningという街まではワインディングが続いて楽しいです。たまに牛とか馬とか柵の外に出ていて危ないです。

Browningでお昼。Taco JohnというTex Mexのファーストフード屋さんで食べました。アメリカの方が食べ物と飲み物断然安いです。

Choteauで給油。ガロン計算なので一体何リットル入れたのかわかりません。ガソリンスタンドの真ん前がガンショップです。アメリカですね。

モンタナは牧場が拡がっています。カナダのアルバータ州も僕地区が盛んなのでここも適してるのでしょう。モンタナの風景はオーストラリア、それもニューサウスウェールズ州の風景を思いださせてくれます。

本当に暑い！GSの温度計では43度までいきました。Great FallsでKFCとA&Wが一緒になった店でドリンク休憩。なんとここKFCの食べ放題が大人一人7.99ドルです。安い！
ここで国境付近の街Kevinにお住まいの老夫婦に出会いました。旦那さんがGeorgeさんで奥さんの名前は聞き逃しました…。世界一周の話しをしたら驚いていました。お土産にカレンダーを持ってけ、と言われましたが、荷物がいっぱいなので断りました。写真を撮らせて頂いたので送らせて頂きます。

そして今はGeorgeさんが育った街Harlowtonでキャンプしてます。ここのキャンプ場は7ドルです。シャワーは無いですけれど水洗トイレもあり快適です。アメリカの物価がカナダより安くて助かります。

明日はイエローストン国立公園です。楽しみだなァ。
 

Day33: 2010年8月26日

Canada: Fort MacLeod to US border Carway

US: Carway to Harlowton, Montana

Today is the last day in Canada.
I got up at 7am and geared up. I used the straps I got yesterday to strap the tent and other stuffs on top of the panniers. It took a while to rearrange the stuffs, so I left there at 9:30am. Carway, the border of the US is 87km away.

Arrived at the border, I spent all my Canadian coins at the gift shop.
At Canadian Custom, I got a stamp and signature on my Carnet. At the US Custom, the officer asked me a few questions and I was off go! That was easy.
But my stay in the States is still 90days after I arrived at Seattle. So I can stay in the States till 23 Oct.

Seeing Rocky Mountains on my right, it was a nice ride down to the States. But it was so hot and windy!

From the border to Browning, the road is nicely winding, so it was fun riding through. But live stocks were on loose, so I gotta be careful.

Had lunch at Browning. Taco John. The foods and drinks are much cheaper in the States than Canada. It will help my tight budget.

Filled up gas at Choteau. It's per gallon, so I wasn't sure how many liter I put. I need to learn the conversion between gallon and liter.

Montana reminds me of NSW, Australia. The scenery is so alike.
It's bloody hot! On board thermometer is 43℃！
I saw the thermometer of s gas station showing 92°F.

I stopped at KFC in Great Falls for a cold drink break. This KFC has buffet for $7.99! That's really cheap.

Here I met a nice old couple from Kevin near the border. They were interested in my RWT, and talked for a while. George, the husband, gave me a calendar but I could not take it as I am full loaded. Instead I took a picture of them and will send it to them!

Now I am camping in Harlowton, the town George grew up. The tent site costs $7 here. It had no shower but has flush toilet. Everything so far is cheaper in the States.

Tomorrow I will be in Yellowstone National Park. It's one of my must see destinations.
