ラスベガス 2日目: タイヤ交換とケンジ君宅 / Las Vegas Day 2: Tire repacement and Kenji's place

Day42: 2010年9月4日

Las Vegas Day2

今日は8時に起きてネットで時間をつぶします。9時ごろにホステルでホットケーキの朝食。タダです。
チェックアウトは11時なので10時半過ぎにホステルを出ました。

さてバイク屋の予約は1時からだからやることが無いぞ。すでに暑いしとりあえずバイク屋に行って時間をつぶすことに。しかしバイク屋まだ閉まってます。こりゃケンジ君宅に行くしかないか。午後から行くって言っちゃってるから、いるかなぁ。

ケンジ君宅はラスベガス南の郊外にあります。ベルを鳴らして待っていたらケンジ君のシェアメイトのマンボー君が起きてきてドアを開けてくれました。昨日は友達の誕生日会だったのでまだケンジ君も寝ているとのこと。申し訳ないです！しばらくしてケンジ君も起きてきたので12時半ごろまでおしゃべりをしてました。

1時にバイク屋に到着。タイヤ交換は前後で501ドルかかりました。今回はメッツェラーのツーランスにしてみました。
以外に交換に時間がかかり、バイク屋を出たのは2時半。

家に戻りおしゃべりをしていたら二人ともまだお昼を食べていないことに気づきかなり遅い昼飯兼早めの夕飯を日本食レストランで食べました。カツ丼を注文！うまかったぁ。

8時に空港へ。ケンジ君の友達のタツヤ君が友達のタイチ君とニューヨークから遊びに来るとのことなので迎えに。
ケンジ君携帯電話失くして連絡が取れず。便名はわかってるので荷物受け取り場所で待っていたんですが、必ずしも荷物をチェックインしてるとは限らない！仕方がないのでアナウンスで呼び出すことに。

二人はアナウンスを聞いていなかったそうなんですが、アナウンス後すぐに偶然に会えました。よかったよかった。

それから夜のラスベガスへ。ベラッジオの噴水、フレモントアーケイドの電光ショー（今日はQueenのWe Will Rock YouとWe are the champonsでした）を見て家に帰りました。

それから2時ごろまでおしゃべりをしてました。こういうのも楽しいですね。

Day42: 04Sept2010

Las Vegas Day2

The checkout time was 11am, so I surfed the Net in the morning.
By 9am, it got already hot and I was wondering what I can do after checking out.
The appointment at the BMW dealer was at 1pm. But as I got nothing else to do, I went to the shop.
But the shop was not opened yet. So I went to Kenji's place, located the south end of Las Vegas.

I came back to the dealer at 1pm and replaced the tires to Metxeler Tourance. The original tires were Bridgestone Battlewing. The odometer reading was 16,500km, so they lasted farly long distance.

Came back to Kenji's place and we chat till 5pm. Then we went to a Japanese restaurant for the early dinner.

At 8pm, we went to McCarran Airport to pick up Kenji's friends, Takuya and Taichi, from New York.
As Kenji lost his mobile phone, so it took a while to find them, but luckily we found them.

Drove to The Strip and saw the water show at Bellagio and then went to Fremont for the arcado show. Queen was on tonight, so I really enjoyed the show

Came back to the house and we were chatting until 2am.
It was fun to have a day like this sometimes.

ルート66とラスベガス‼ / The Route 66 & Las Vegas!!

Day41: 2010年9月3日

Grand Canyon South Rim to Las Vegas

今日は6時に起きて7時過ぎに出発。暑くなりそうな気配。

ウィリアムズ(Williams)に8時半頃到着して給油。ここから40号線を西に向かいます。

セリグマン(Seligman)からルート66へ。ロードキルカフェ(轢き殺された死骸を使ったカフェと言う意味)で早めのランチを取ります。この街は良く写真で紹介されている所だと思います。バイクの温度計は39度に上がりました。

ピーチスプリングス(Peach Springs)を越えてキングスマン(Kingsman)へ。ここから93号でラスベガスへ。温度計は46度まで上がります。

アリゾナ州とネバダ州の境にコロラド川を堰とめたフーバーダム(Hoover Dam)があるんですげど、ハイウェイの橋が工事中でダムまで下がらなければいけません。検問所もあって、ただでさえ混んでいるのに大渋滞。この暑い中渋滞に巻き込まれ死にそうです。時間は午後1時半、温度計は48.5度。なんとか抜けてハイウェイに戻りました。ここからラスベガスまではひとっ走りです。

ラスベガスの街中でバイクの温度計では49.5度まで上がりました。今日の宿ユースホステルを見つけてチェックイン。早速シャワーを浴びて部屋で涼みます。

日暮れ時に街に出ようとしたらドイツ人のAntjeに出会いました。ツアーガイドなんですが、今は5週間のホリデーでアメリカの国立公園巡りをしているそうです。ラスベガスは詳しいので今夜は彼女に付いて行くことにしました。

シャトルバスは24時間乗り放題で7ドル。ラスベガスの目抜き通りストリップの名物パリス、トレジャーアイランド、シーザーズパレス、ベラッジオ、ニューヨークニューヨーク、MGM、ルクソールなどを見て回りました。ラスベガス、凄いんですが何とも馬鹿げています。エコなんて言葉はこの街とは無縁です。ホントに人は色んなアイデアを出して色んなものをつくりますね。資本主義の競争の原理がこんなに馬鹿げているけど偉大な街を作り出しました。資本主義の良い部分と悪い部分が赤ら様に見れる街、それがラスベガスですかね。

夜の1時過ぎで31度あったので、やはり昼間は40度超えてたのでしょう。明日はタイヤ交換をしてケンジ君の家に行きます。

Day41: 03Sep2010

Grand Canyon South Rim to Las Vegas

I got up at 6am and left Gran Canyon after 7am. It's gonna be a hot day!

Arrived at Williams at 8:30am. Fueled up and took the route 40 to West here.

Off the route 40 at Seligman and I was on the famous route 66! I stopped at Road Kill Cafe for early lunch. I took a few photos of the town.

Riding through the route 66, passing Peach Springs and so on. The temp was soaring up. My thermometer was showing 46 degrees!

At Kingsman I took the route 93 to Las Vegas.
The border of Arizona and Nevada, Colorado river is dividing the two states. Usually we could go across by a bridge on Highway, but it was under construction... I had to go down to Hoover Dam. There was a Police check point and traffic jam! The temp was up 48 degrees! I was almost cooked.

Once I got out from the traffic, Las Vegas is not far away.

In the town of Las Vegas, the temp went up to 49.5 degrees!
I found Youth Hostel where I stayed tonight and checked in. I went to take shower immediately!
Having a rest in the room and I was about go out to the town after the sunset, I met Antje from Germany. She is a tour guide but she is 5 weeks holiday going around National Parks. As she knows Las Vegas well, I went around the town with her.

We took Shuttle bus to the strip and walked around to see Paris, Caesars Palace, Bellagio, MGM, New York New York and Luxsor.
It was Friday night, so there were full of people ob the strip and casinos. People do have money to waste here. The competition made this city so crazy. People come up with new ideas and try to impress people to come. This is the mighty part and ugly of Capitalism.

Las Vegas is so crazy and ridiculous! Everything is so big and full of energy and rust. There is no word of ECO in this city.

At 1:30am, the temp was 31 degrees. We went back to the hostel. Tomorrow I will replace my tires and visit Kenji's place.

グランドキャニオンサウスリム2日目 / Grand Canyon South Rim Day2

Day40: 2010年9月2日

South Rim Day 2

今日はバイクはお休みです。朝日を見たかったのですが、例の如く寝坊。7時に起きました。

寝袋やライナーなどを外に干して日光浴をさせます。準備が出来たら歩いてビジターセンターに向かいシャトルバスでカイバブルートへ。バスは楽ちんですね見晴台から風景を眺めてつぎのバスを待ちまたビジターセンターへ。

早めのランチを済ませ、ドリンクを買ってトレイルを歩きに。お昼前なのにかなり暑いです。こりゃあドリンクを買って正解でしたな。

ずーっと渓谷の淵を歩いているのですが、風景は大体同じです。素晴らしい景色でも飽きて来るものですね。ヤッパリ風景は誰かと共有してより感動が増すものですね。

そうそう、グランドキャニオンではリスや鹿やエルクに沢山出会えます。リスがグランドキャニオンをバックに立ち上がっている様はカワイイと言うよりもかっこイイです。

歩道の脇に渓谷の層を成している岩のサンプルが置かれているのですが、なんで岩の層にヒンドゥーの神々の名前が付いてるのでしょう？ビシュヌ、ブラフマーやラマなど。ネイティブ・インディアンとインドのインディアンを掛けたのか⁉ ナゾです。

ブライトエンジェルトレイル(Bright Angel Trail)を少し下りましたが、暑いのと疲れてきたので途中下車で引き返しました。

モハビポイント(Mohave Point)やホピポイント(Hopi Point)では風景が多少変わり目を楽しませてくれます。

ここから疲れがどっと来たのでバスで移動。バーミットレスト(Hermit Rest)まで来て終了！イヤーグランドキャニオン見応えがありましたな。

帰りはバスで。ブライトエンジェル辺りの見晴台でコンドルについての説's明をしてたので足を止めてみました。レンジャーのオジサンの話しは上手いですね。みんなから笑いを取っていました。コンドルは以前絶滅をしかけて(22羽しかいなくなったそう)二度と自然界で見る事は出来ないと思われていたのですが、努力の結果今ではグランドキャニオンにも姿を戻しました。まだ予断許しませんがこれから更に数を増やしていって欲しいものです。

地図を見ると近くに図書館があるので行ってみました。ここでようやくネットにアクセス。パソコン使ってたら3ドル取られました…。ケンジ君からメールがあり、泊まってOＫとのこと！ありがとう。

今日は歩き疲れました。明日はラスベガス入りです。あの有名なルート66を通って行こうと思います。

Day40: 2Sep2010

South Rim Day 2

This morning I wanted to get up before the sunrise but I slept in as usual...

I got up at 7am and hot ready for a day. Put out the sleeping bag, the liner, groves and so on under the sunlight.

I walked to Visitor Centre and caught a shuttle bus to Kaibab route. Watched the canyon from the view point and went back to Visitor Centre.

Had early lunch and bought a couple bottles of sports drink and now ready for hiking.

It was before lunch time but already so hot! Luckily I got enough drink.

Until Bright Angel trailhead, the scenery does not change much. Even such a magnificent scenery, I could get bored. I need someone to share the moment with to appreciate the scenery more!

Oh here at Gran Canyon, you can see lots of deers, squalls, Elks and other wild lives.

Along side of the trail, the sample of rocks of each layer of Grand Canyon displayed. Not sure why some of the rocks have Hindu god name like Vishnu, Brahma and Rama. Maybe Native Indian and Hindu Indian mixed up!

I walked down the Bright Angel Trail a bit. But it got really hot and I was getting tired, so I head back.

Walked through Mohave Point and Hopi Point, the most popular view points. The views were changed and I enjoyed the scenery. Then caught the shuttle bus to Hermit Rest as I was too tired.

On the way back, there was a talk on California Condor. I was amazed how nearly extinct bird was recovered. It is still facing the threat of extinction but hopefully the number will increase in the future.

As I was too tired from walking and heat, I went to sleep early.

Tomorrow I will go through the famous route 66 to Las Vegas.

グランドキャニオン: サウスリム / Grand Canyon South Rim

Day39: 2010年9月1日

Grand Canyon North Rim to South Rim
15,636km to 15,992km = 356km

今日は6時に起きて7時には出発の準備ができました。売店にWiFiがあるのでメールをチェックしてから出発。ノースリムの見所Point ImperialとVista Encantadaなどに行くつもりだったんですが、道が封鎖されてます…。仕方がないのでサウスリムに行くことに。ノースリムからサウスリムまで飛べば16キロ。しかし鳥では無いので、陸路だと345キロの遠回りしなければなりません。

Jacob Lakeでとりあえず給油。オイルをチェックすると窓の半分以下なのでオイルを足すことに。もうオイル交換してから3000キロ以上走ってますからね。

パニアを開けてオイルを取り出したら、漏れます。しかも水も侵入してます。こちらは壊れてないパニアです。オイルは仕方ないとして水が入っているのにはショック。防水性能が良く無いみたいです。
オイルと水を拭き取り、バイクにオイルを注ぎ足しました。

89号線に入りマーブルキャニオン地帯(Marble Canyon)を走ります。ここら辺はナバホインディアン(Navajo)の居留地があるみたいで道端に露店を出してアクセサリーとか売ってます。風景も良いですよ。

キャメロン(Cameron)で64号線に入りサウスリムへ。途中View Pointとあるので入ってみると、入園料1ドル。View Pointにお金を払うの初めてです。小コロラド川渓谷(Little Colorado River Gorge)だそうです。ナバホの土地にあるので彼らが管理しているようです。なかなか見晴らしが良いですよ。グランドキャニオンに負けてないかも。1ドルは安いな。ここでも露店で色々売ってます。魅力的なのもありますが、荷物になるので買いません。

そしてサウスリムに到着。
デザートヴュウ(Desert View)でサウスリムと最初の絶景です。見晴台もあってなかなかいいですね。

個人的にはノースリムよりもこちらの方がいいです。

いろいろな見所を見ながらグランドキャニオンビレッジに到着後。キャンプ場は18ドル。2泊する事に。

ビジターセンター付近は工事中で入れないのですが、断崖絶壁の淵を歩きながら絶景を堪能。

歩いてると日本語が聞こえてきたので声をかけてみました。
佐賀県出身のまゆさんとさおりさんです。会社を辞めてアメリカ旅行に来たそうです。しばらくベンチに座りお話しさせていただきました。まゆさんはこれからメキシコに行くそうです。良い旅を！

夕暮れ時なのでキャンプ場に戻夕飯を食べて(もちろんインスタントラーメンです)寝る準備です。ここはWiFi無いからメールチェック出来ないや…。

明日はシャトルバスに乗っていろいろな見所に行きます。

Day39: 2010年9月1日

Grand Canyon North Rim to South Rim
15,636km to 15,992km = 356km

I got up at 6am and checked e-mail (General Store has WiFi) and left there at 7:30am.

I was gonna go to Point Imperial and Vista Encantada but the road was closed! I gave up and headed to South Rim. If you can fly, it is 16km to South Rim, but on land it is 345km!

At Jacob Lake I checked the engine oil level. It was below half of the check window, so I topped it up. It's been more than 3,000km since the service at Anderwerks.

I opened the pannier and found oil was leaking. Also water got inside. That's no good. Anyway I wiped off oil and water.

Marble Canyon area is beautiful. There is Navajo Indian Reserve around here, so beside the road I could see lots of stoles selling Native arts.

At Cameron Turing into the route 64. I saw "View Point" sign and I turned in. There was a gate and the entree fee of $1. This is Little Colorado River Gorge, located in Navajo Tribal Park.
The view was great. It is nothing less than Grand Canyon. $1 is a bargain.

Entering South Rim from East Entrance. Desert View is the first stop. Here has a watch tower and the view is so good. I prefer South than North.

Arriving at Grand Canyon Village after so many view points. The campground costs $18 a night. I will stay for 2 nights.

Unfortunately, the rim trail around Visitor Centre is under construction and closed. But still I could enjoy other parts of the rim trail and see lots of magnificent views of the canyon.

Tomorrow I will take shuttle buses to go around the park.

グランドキャニオン‼ ノースリム / Grand Canyon!! North Rim

Day38: 2010年8月31日

Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park to Grand Canyon North Rim

今日は日の出前に起きようと思っていたんですが、寒くて7時まで寝袋の中にくるまってました。

8時には用意が出来て出発。Sunrise Pointに行きます。もう太陽が登ってしまったせいか、昨日と方が良かったです。それから公園内の見所を回って11時まで堪能しました。ここは良い所ですね。

ビジターセンターでメールのチェックと電話。アシアナ航空から連絡が無いのでキャンセルと返金がどうなってるか確認。もうプロセスされたとのこと。これで一件落着。次にイエローストーンで出会ったKenji君に電話。予定が早まったので明後日か明々後日にはラスベガス入りするので、泊めてもらえるかの確認。しかし電話が繋がらない！コインは呑み込まれてしまいました…。うーん、何故だろう。他の場所でも試したのですが、同じ結果です。ワシの掛け方が悪いのか…。Kenji君、この日記を見たらメール下さい！あとここにコメント下さい！ワシの携帯は圏外でつながりません。

ここからザイオン国立公園(Zion Nat'l Park)へ。近いので1時半には着きました。ザイオンと聞くとユダヤのパレスチナ移住問題を思い出します。しかもワシはいまベーグル持ってるし。

ここでも入口で12ドル払います。東側から入ったのですが、道が工事中で何度も通行止に会いました。しかも今日は暑い！足止めを喰らう度にだんだんとムカついてきて、ザイオンはもうイイや、という気分になってきました。2時半頃にようやくビジターセンターに到着。見所へはシャトルバスでしか行けないし、あまりそそられる風景も無さそうなので立ち去ることに。12ドルもったいないかな。

また足止めを喰らうのは嫌なので、遠回りですが南の出口から出て9号線を西へ。59号線で東に戻り5つ目の州アリゾナにはいりました。結局ザイオンに行った為に12ドルと2時間半無駄にしました。トホホ。

グランドキャニオンに着いたのは5時半頃です。しかしアリゾナは一時間遅いので4時半に。入園料は12ドルでキャンプ場は18ドルです。

テントを張ったら早速Bright Angel Pointへ。グランドキャニオン、やりますな。ヒツジさんも大興奮です。これがあのグランドキャニオンかぁ～、と勘当しながら風景を見てました。

明日はノースリムの見所を見た後サウスリムに向かいます。356キロと大分遠回りになります。

Day38: 31Aug2010

Bryce Canyon Nat'l Park to Grand Canyon North Rim

I wanted to wake up before the sunrise but it was too cold to get up. I got up at 7am and was ready to go by 8am.

I went to Sunrise Point. As the sun had already gone up, the view was prettier yesterday. Anyway I went through all view points in the park and had great time.

By 11am, I came back to Visitor Centre. Here has free WiFi, so I checked e-mail. Also made a couple of calls. One was to Asiana air, they confirmed my cancellation of the ticket and refunded. Another one was to Kenji, who I met in Yellowstone. He told me I can stay at his place in Las Vegas. But somehow I could not get through to him...
I tried a few times but the same result. Kenji, please e-mail me if you see this!

I went to Zion Nat'l Park. It is very close to Bryce. The entrance fee is again $12. It was very hot and the road is under construction. I gotta stop many times and waited under the sun. I was't enjoying at all. Finally around 2:30pm, I arrived at Visitor Centre. Visitors must take a shuttle bus to those scenic points. I looked around the centre and I found nothing really fascinating in Zion, so I decided to leave. I'm sorry to those who like Zion Nat'l Park but I did not have good time there. May be next time.

As I did not want to go through the same road again, I took the Route 9 to west and took the route 59 to east. I wasted $12 and 2hours and half there.

Now I am in Arizona, 5th State of this trip. I had to wind 1 hour backward. Arrived at North Rim of Grand Canyon around 4:30pm. The entrance fee is $12 and the campground is $18.

Quickly set up the tent and went to Bright Angel Point.
Yes, the view is magnificent! This is Grand Canyon!! Mr. Sheep was also so excited.

Tomorrow I will go around the view points of North Rim, then ride to South Rim, where 356km away from here.
