Day 633: 2012年4月21日

Buenos Aires (Ueno Sansou Buenos Aires)
61,294km

I did not do much today. Just as the title shows.

We made rice balls for lunch. Seaweed and pickled plums made us really happy.

In the afternoon, I accompanied Ikezou who was planning to do street performance on sunday to paint his "Ninja" costume. He used old clothes, Karate cloth, kickboxing gloves, etc to make the costume. He used the paint sprays to paint them in silver.

It was windy that made his job hard but he managed to paint them all.
DSCF2037.jpgDSCF2038.jpg

DSCF2039.jpg
We made "Pimienta Rellenos (Stuffed grean capsicum)" for dinner. Capsicums are generally laerge in Argentina, just like in Australia, so one serve of "Stuffed" became really huge!

Then we had dinner together. This is the best part of staying at a Japanese hostel. Of course same can be done in International hostels, but everyone would have different tastes, so it is easier to make it happen in a Japanese hostel.
DSCF2041.jpg

Tomorrow Ikezou will perform on a street. I am looking forward seeing how many crowds he would get.

Day 632: 2012年4月20日

Buenos Aires (Ueno Sansou Buenos Aires)
61,294km

I moved to a Japanese hostel in the city today. I repacked my luggages to make them easier to carry. But hey were really heavy...

I said good-bye to everyone and was going to leave Dakar Motos, Sandra rent me a carrying wheel. It would make my life really easy!! But it broke on the way to the station... So I needed to abandan it on the street... (I left it where people left garbage bags). I carried the luggages by hands...

After many minutes of struggling, finally I gotto the station.

I got to Retiro station, but it was hard to walk in the crowds with the heavy luggages. So I caught a cab to the hostel. It cost me AR$14.

After checked-in, I was told that there was another motorcyclist here. It was Akira! He was visiting Yamaha dealer and was not there. He was planning to go to Lima, Peru again and ship his bike back to Japan.

In the afternoon, I was chatting with Yukari and Hitomi. Then Akira came back from Yamaha and we chat for a while.

In the evening, I talked with other guests. It's good to have a conversation in Japanese!

I wonder what I should do tomorrow.

Day 631: 2012年4月19日

Buenos Aires (Dakar Motos)
61,294km

Well, as I could not cash out yesterday, I was a bit nervous this morning. Mosquitos bothered me early and it got really cold early in the morning, I woke up a few times. So I did not have much sleep...

Javier & Sandra came to the workshop around 9:30am. They were talking to Clark, who was gonna taking his bike to the airport. His front tyre was completely flat, so Javier fixed it.
4ee2c625.jpeg

DSCF2033.jpg
The tube installed was made in Vietnam and in poor quality. Also it was too narrow for his rim and tyre. Javier fit a new tube and Clark was off to go!

I went to the bank nearby and tried to cash out with my Japanese bank card.

I input to withdraw AR$1,000 to the ATM. I worried a bit but I heard the machine started to count the bills!! I could cash out AR$1,000! Then I did the same again and got AR$2,000 in total. The maximum daily withdrawal in Argentina is AR$2,000. The ATM was "Banelco" system, so I went to the city to try with "LINK" one.

Why do I need to cash out lots of pesos? Well, for shipping my bike, I need to have US$1,800 in cash (pesos in equal value would be fine too). As I have some US$ in hand, so I need to withdraw at least AR$6,000.

I took a train to the city. It costs AR$0.90. I walked arond Ave Florida and found a bank with a sign of "LINK". I tried with my Aussie bank card. Then it worked!! I could cash out AR$2,000 successfully. As I thought yesterday, it works with "LINK" network. But this morning I was checking the receipts of past withdrawals, and I was cashing out from "Banelco" ATMs. So as Javier & Sandra said, recently the government made a new policy to restrict foreginer withdrawing cash. But I wonder why... I tried with my Japanese bank card and I could cash out. So if I cash out at  "Link" and "Banelco" ATMs, I could get AR$4,000 a day.

But AR$17 will be charged for each withdrawal. Plus Assie and Japanese banls will charge "foregin withdrawal fee". Just cashing out will cost me a lot...

As I could obtain cash I needed, I went back to Dakar Motos.

As I am moving to a Japanese hostel in the city tomorrow, I was sorting my luggages.

I was released from the stress, so I got sleepy and I had a nap.

When I woke up, it was already dark. Clark came back from the airport. He said everyhing went well and his fee would be US$1,600 as he took off the front wheel (the smaller in cubic size, the cheaper the fee will be).

We all had empanadas for dinner.

Day 630: 2012年4月18日

Clonia del Sacramento  - Urguay to Buenos Aires - Argentina (Dakar Motosl)
61, 274km to 61,296km =22 km (1km Uruguay side / 21km Argentina side)

After having breakfast, I said good-bye to Alex and left the hostel. I went to the port early (8:30am) as I thought I might take time to go through immigration and custom. I parked Esperanza in front of the ferry pier and went to the building to check-in. But it was still too early for checking-in, so I waited there till after 9am...
DSCF2018.jpg

After checking-in, I went through immigration process. At the same counter, I could exit out Urguay and enter Argentina! That'S very efficient!! They told me I should cancel the temporary vehicle import later.

I waited at the waiting room upstairs untill 10am. The finally gate was open and I went to the pier. An officercame and I handed i the temporary import document and it was done. I rode into the ferry.
DSCF2019.jpg

I wanted to take a window side seat but they were all taken, so I took one in the middle. The ferry left he pier exactly at 10:30am and cruised to another side of the river for 1 hour. I watched a sucer match between Real Madrid and a team rom Munich.  I could not see the another side of the river.
0d3aa2e0.jpeg

9484ed8a.jpeg
Around 11:15am, finally I could see the city of Benos Aires.

The ferry arrived just before 11:30am. I rode off the ferry and went to Custom. It took a while but I could get a temporary import permission without any problem. I rode into the city of Buenos Aires.
DSCF2029.jpg

As a big capital city, there were tons of toraffics. I felt that drivers in Brazil and Uruguay were better behaved. I went to Dakar Motos straight.

Javier and Sandra welcame me. It's been 2 months since I left to Paraguay. The were about to have a lunchbreak, and they ordered a lunch elivery for me too.

At Dakar Motos there was another motorcyclist staying - Edward from UK. He told me a Canadian couple staying here to but they were out to the airport to leave their bikes. We had lunch together with Javier and Sandra and talked for a while.

Then an American rider - Clark came in. He was to ship his bike back to the US in a few days.

After 4pm, I went out to withdraw some cash from ATMs (I need to pay in cash for shipping my bike). But somehow the ATMs stating I was exceeding my daily withdrawal limit.... I hadn't withdrawed any money today. I tried several banks but all the same result. I thougt my account was frozen, so I went back to Dakar Motos and skyped to my bank n Australia. But the operator said to me that m account was fine.

Javier andSandra told me that around a month ago, the government made it tough for foreigners to withdraw cash out of the ATMs. The government is afraid of foreigners taking cash outside of Argentina. Now it would be hard to exchange Pesos to US$... I wonder if the government of Argentina is facing bankruptcy again.

I went to a few banks again, but it was the same result. There are 2 networks of ATMs in Argentina - "Banelco" and "Link". The ATMs I used today were all under "Banelco". It looked like my card would not work with "Banelco" network.

So I would go to the city and try to withdraw from "Link" ATMs. I thought I could have a relazing day, but I ended up walking for more than 1 1/2 hours.

Day 566: 2012年2月13日

Puerto Iguazu (Peter Pan Hostel)
55,488km to 55,492km = 4km

Buen viaje!!

Day 566: 13 FEB 2012

Puerto Iguazu (Peter Pan Hostel)
55,488km to 55,492km = 4km

I went to the consulate of Brazil here in Puerto Iguazu in the morning. I got up at 5:30am and left the campground at 7am. But wheI got to the consulate, there were 2 people (Australians) aleady waiting!

They told me that I need to print out an applicaition form and a bank statement. Luckily a hostel next door "Bambu" was offering the service (20APs!) and I went there to print them out.

When I came back, there were more people waiting. A staff just came by a car and he said "Eeryone has a application form and a bank statement ready?" Some did not and they all rushed to Bambu. What a good business they have.

Once in the consulate, the aplication was fairly simple. But as I would be riding in and out of Brazil, the staff was taking a time (usually an applicant needs to have a ticket - bus or air - out of Brazil). Anyway, my application would be processend and I paid 115APs for the fee. It would be ready by tomorrow 11am - 12noon. So I have to stay 1 more day here.

I went to a hostel in front of the consulate. The name is "Peter Pan Hostel". There was a space for motorcycle and I coul get a dorm bed for 70APs (including breakfast).

After checked in, I washed my shirt and socks. As I was wearing them for 5days, they were...

I updated my blog in English and surfed the Net for a while. Then I went out to have lunch. I found a nice empanada shop. 1 empanada costs 4APs. I bought 4 diferent ones and they were all freshly made and excelent!

I came back to the hostel and had a nap.

I the afternoon, I went out to have the empanadas again, but the shopwas closed. So I had donner at a hamburger shop nearby where I met Sato from Japan and Jun from Korea. The are both students. We had dinner together and chat for a while. Sato told me that he came from Paraguay today. He caught a ferry from Paraguay to Argentina directly!! He did not know about it yesterday and he had to stay 1 night in Ciudad del Este last night to get a Brazilian visa. But this morning, he was told that he could catch the ferry. I could have caught it to Paraguay... But anyway, I need the Brazilian visa sooner or later.

Jun will fly to El Calafate tomorrow and Sato will visit Cataratas del Iguazu tomorrow. Buen viaje!

Hopefuly I can get the visa tomorrow as I was told. Then I will cross to Brazil, then to Paraguay. If everything works as planned, I should be able to get to Pension Sonoda @ Yguazu Japanese setlement.
