Day 438: 2011年10月6日

Sucre (Hostal Pachamama)
41,130km to 41,131km = 1km

Day 438: 06 OCT 2011

Sucre (Hostal Pachamama)
41,130km to 41,131km = 1km

I took my GS to "Motoservi" from the morning. I took off the silencer, the mad guard, and then the shock absorber. I put the bike cover and I was ready for Chile.

Uwe found 2 of his rear wheel spoke was broken the other day, and Jimmy welded one and Jaime made a new sopke. Then Jimmy was retensioning the spokes using a wheel balancer made by Jaime, well 30 years ago. He said it was the first hand made tool he made.

Jimmy is just 16 years old. He can rebuild engines, welding, painting, retensioning spokes etc all by himself. Very well trained.

Uwe and I went for lunch and went back to the hostel for a break. I checked bus information in Chile.

We went back to Motoservi later and I picked up my pannier. The condition was improved, but I still need some tricks to close the lid properly and watertight.

Around 3pm, the rain pissed down. I finished my homework and went to the school. Today would be my last lesson @ "Fenix". During the lesson, Nicol came to give me an invitation card for her 15th birthday party. I told her unfortunately I had to go to Chile friday evening and would be unable to attend her party. She looked very disappointed... I am really sorry.

Now my Spanish improved a lot, thanks to my teacher Lulu and other staff of Fenix.

Uwe and I went to "Shanghai" Chinese restaurant near the plaza. The meal was pretty good and the price was not too expensive. Uwe said he would come back to eat there again.

Well, tomorrow I have to get ready to Chile. I will go to the bus terminal to buy a ticket to Oruro and spend the day with friends @ the hostel.

Day 437: 2011年10月5日

Sucre (Hostal Pachamama)
41,095km to 41,120km = 25km

DSCF9666.jpg今日は朝からエスペランサを試運転。

Day 437: 05 OCT 2011

Sucre (Hostal Pachamama)
41,095km to 41,120km = 25km

I took my GS out for a test. First, I brought her to a wash place. Before started to wash my GS, I checked the shock. And I found oil on the rod... But it was too early to judge anything, so washed her to get rid of all dirts and oil.

Then I rode for a while. First check, I saw liquid at the bottom of the cylinder!!! I touched it, it was water.

I kept riding again and checked. There was no oil.

I rode again and checked at a petrol station, and I saw oil was at the bottom f the shock... I was shocked... I rode to Motoservi and checked with Jaime. But we could not find any oil.

So I rode around the city and came back to Motoservi. Then I saw clearly oil was leaing from the cylinder...

I qickly went back to the hostel and made an order to the Wilbers dealer @ Santiago de Chile. And I sent an e-mail to the seller if I could get a refund as the shock he sent was faulty.

I will leave to Oruro on Friday evening. I will be in Oruro saurday morning and will cross to Chile and get to Iquique saturday evening. Then I will catch a bus to Santiago, so if all connections work fine, I will b in Santiago Sunday evening.

Uwe and I cooked Bangers & Mashes for diner. And with friends @ the hostel, I went to see a movie at the cinema. We watched "Hall Pass (Pase Libre)". It was fun movie and we enjoyed watching it.

Tomorrow I will buy a bus ticket to Oruro and prepare for a bus trip to Santiago.

Day 436: 2011年10月4日

Sucre (Hostal Pachamama)
41,085km to 41,095km = 10km

DSCF9661.jpgDSCF9662.jpg朝からMotoserviに行き、ショックの装着作業に取り掛かります。

(Que estas haciendo en Sucre?)」

Day 436: 04 OCT 2011

Sucre (Hostal Pachamama)
41,085km to 41,095km = 10km

FInally, after more than 3 weeks of waiing, I received the package from the States.

I went to Motoservi this morning and Jaime fitted it onto my GS. But there was a drama before fitting...

When I took out the shock from the box, I saw some oil on the cylinder of the new shock (yesterday). I was afraid that it could be leaking from the shock. I cleaned it to see if it was actually leaking or not.

In order to fit the ESA unit, the spring etc to the new shock, we had to take of the end bit of the rod (the bottom of he shock). When Jaime unscrewed it, oil splashed from the rod!! It seemed like the rebound adjusting valve was open some how, that's why oil came out from the valve. The shock lost some oil, but not too much. But because oil splashed everywhere, now it would be hard to tell, if the oil is leaking from the cylinder or just the remaining from the splash.

After we fit it, I took my GS a spin. First, I saw some oil on the rod, but it was remaining from the splash. I cleaned it again, and kept going with the test riding. I could not see any leaking, but I am not fully convinced yet. So I will take another test ride tomorrow for a longer distance and will see if there is any leakage or not. Wish me luck!!

If it fails again, I will make an order to Chile for a new Wilbers shock. I will catch a bus to Chile and pick the shock up and come back to Sucre to fit it ono my GS.

Anyway, hopefully all turns out to be all right tomorrow.

In the evening, a TV crew from Netherland came to the Spanish school "Fenix" to film. Somehow I was invited to join the shooting. They filmed Susie's English class teaching those Bolivian kids, and Yashira's Spanish class teaching Marco, Eric and me! We were just pretending having Spanish lesson there in the group and the TV crew came in. Yashira asked us some questions in Spanish. As Marco and Eric are Dutch, so they were interviewd in Dutch. I was just nodding while they were interviewed.

It was my 2nd TV appearance (going to be) during this trip. The 1st one was in Mexico City @ the Spanish Lesson as well (TBS from Japan).

Wish me luck for the test ride tomorrow!

Day 435: 2011年10月3日

Sucre (Hostal Pachamama)
41,085km

DSCF9657.jpgDSCF9658.jpg箱からショックをだし見てみると、シリンダー表面にオイルが…。

今日はSubjectivos(仮定法)を。

Day 435: 03 OCT 2011

Sucre (Hostal Pachamama)
41,085km

I went to the post office from the morning. The lady already knew me and told me "Your package is not here." as soon as she saw me. But I told her "According to the tracking, it arrived Sucre last friday morning." But she said "It's not here." without checking anything. I told her "It should be here or in custom, you should check." Then another guy started to search. Then he found it!

We check the tracking number and the name on the package, and it was the one! Finally I received it.

So my package was there either from Friday afternoon or from Saturday morning. So if they were not lazy, I could receive it when I visited them Saturday...

Anyway, I was really happy to receive it. It was dispatched on 15 SEP, so I waited for 18days!!  Back to the hostel, I opened the box and saw a new shock absorber!! I guess I was smiling all the way.

Uwe came back from the seamstress and we went to Motoservi. Jaime, Shan, and Jimie were also happy to see me holding the box! However... when I took the shock out of the box, I saw oil on the cylinder of the shock.... Where did it come from.

The shock might be leaking already?? It is a brand new shock. I was shocked!!

Well, it could be contaminated in the workshop in the States while they were taking off the ESA unit, or it was there from the factory. I would not know if it leaked from the shock or not unless we put it on the bike and I test ride her.

Anyway, it was already 11am, the installation would be done in the afternoon or tomorrow. As I had to got to the Spanish class, I told Jaime to do it tomorrow morning, so I can be there.

Day 434: 2011年10月2日

Sucre (Hostal Pachamama)
41,085km

Mierda...

Day 434: 02 OCT 2011

Sucre (Hostal Pachamama)
41,085km

It's Sunday. The post office was closed and the most of the shops were closed. Uwe and I went to buy Saltenas @ "El Patio" (I bought 2 Saltenas. 6Bs each) and then went to Mercado to get some more Saltenas (3B each). Back to the hostel, we had a big breakfast. As those "El Patio" Saltenas cost twice as much as those Mercado Saltenas, the quality was so much better.

After breakfast, Uwe started to disassembling his KTM, so I was watching him doing that. He wanted to change the head light bulb, but he found out that the socket was burnt because he fitted 100w bulb! When he bought it in Lima, he asked for 55w, but the shop gave him 100w... He fitted without checking the Watt. It was an expensive lesson that in South America, we had to make sure what we got before leaving the shop.

He also took the right hand side fuel tank and so on, preparing for welding the mout of sub-frame.

As we did not get hungry around lunch time, he continued disassembling the KTM. He also found out the rear shock absorber was fitted in other side (the rebund adjuster should be on the right hand side, but it was in the left hand side...). This was done in Bogota, Colombia when it was rebuilt... It works fine, but now he cannot leach the adjuster. So he will ask Jaime to refit the shock properly.

Around 2pm, when I went to the kitchen to make cups of coffee, Martin - a boy working at the hostel - gave me a plate of Chicharon (deep fried portk libs). It was a nice afternoon snack! Thanks, Martin.

It started to rain a bit, so Uwe and I went under the roof, where we chat with 2 Aussie girls. They were very nice!

We started to cook pasta sauce and once it's done, I gave Martin a !Judo" lesson. I am not an expert of Judo at all, but I know the basic. It was goot to do some exercise before dinner.

We played few games of chess before and after dinner. With Julian from France, we talked in Spanish.

Tomorrow is Monday. I will go to the post office in the morning. If I am lucky, it will be there. If not, it might be stuck at Custom, so I mught need to go to the airport.
